The Alano Español is also known as Alano and Spanish Bulldog. It is a large Molosser dog breed, originating in Spain that can stand up to 24 inches and weigh around 75 to 88 pounds when fully matured. It is extremely athletic dog with a well proportioned body that enables the dog to achieve high speed and stamina to keep running for long distances. It is used for herding animal cattle, hunting and bull fighting. The breed has very strong and powerful jaws that help it hold large animals. The front legs of this breed are stronger than back legs. The backbone is either straight or slightly upward but never descending. The head is similar to a bulldog. The muzzle is wide with a wide black nose along with open nostrils. The coat of this breed comes in yellow, wolf gray, fawn, red, brindled. White chest flashes are acceptable but not predominant white. The face can have black mask. The skin is very thick with neck folds and some wrinkles on the face. This breed is not recognized by AKC however it is recognized by Spanish Kennel Club, BBC, DRA. Many other associations are working to recognize this dog as a separate breed.
The Alano Español dog is found in many different colours like yellow, wolf gray, fawn, red, brindled with splashes of white on the chest but white as a dominant colour is not acceptable.
The coat of Alano Español is short, coarse and rusty. It is never soft or velvety.
Being used in packs, the dog has a natural tendency to be very social with other dogs. It is a very dominant breed but very controllable by its master. The dog is reliable, stable and very gentle and friendly with people it knows. It is specially affectionate with children, particularly if socialized and trained from a young age. However, obedience training and socialization is necessary throughout the dogs life. This dog is fearless, courageous and loyal to its family and wary of strangers. It can attack an intruder or a potential threat without warning if it feels danger. Its fearless approach means the dog will fight and hold the danger until ordered otherwise. This trait makes it an excellent guard and watch dog. Being an outside working dog, it is not easy to house-break this breed. It likes to be outside working rather than inside the house. The dog has a cat-like ability to climb on trees as well as it can jump to great heights from a standstill position. This dog is not recommended for weak or feeble owners. The owner should be very authoritative and confident, should establish himself as true pack leader otherwise, this dominant and independent dog will try to become packleader itself. This situation can give rise to undesirable behavior in otherwise very obedient dog breed.
The short coat requires minimum grooming. Occasional brushing of the coat will keep it debris-free. This dog is mainly an outside dog. It should be bathed when necessary as frequent bathing will strip the dog skin of its natural shine and oil.
It can follow instructions and can learn fast but needs a confident and firm trainer who can show true packleader qualities.
As a family pet, this dog will need lots of physical activities. A long walk three times a day is best for a family pet Alano Español. It is best suited for country life or in a house with a large yard where it can run and play as it pleases. This breed is not recommended for apartment life.
