The American breeders are breeding three different varieties: the Mountain Feist, the Bench-legged Feist, and the Pencil-tail Feist. The American Treeing Feist are often referred to as the Mountain Feist. The head has a medium length muzzle, with a slightly rounded skull. The eyes are small and dark in color. The ears are set well on side of the head, wedge shaped, and held erect or semi-erect. The muzzle is medium length and tapering to a point. The nose us black and self-colored according to its coat. The bite is scissor or level. The neck is medium length and strong. The topline is level. The chest is fairly deep and well ribbed. The back is straight and strong. Forelegs are straight and strong. Hind legs are muscular, with hocks slightly bent. The feet are small and compact, with arched toes and thick pads. The tail is set high and carried erect. Movement: Swift and very agile, with flowing gait.
The coat of these dogs come in tricolor with spots, red and white, red, black, black and tan, blue and white, red brindle, and white.
Their coat is short and smooth.
The American Treeing Feist is a high-spirited, yet very lovable breed. They do great for squirrel hunting for this dog is par excellent. These dogs also take on rabbits, birds, any small game. They will need a firm, calm, confident and consistent pack leader.
These breeds are very easy to groom. Occasional brushing and grooming maintenance is recommended to remove dead or excessive hairs.
These breeds are intelligent and are very easy to train but will need a firm, consistent and fair trainer. Training should be at its best when given positive reinforcement. Early socialization and obedience training at puppyhood is highly recommended for these breed to be at its best temperament.
They mainly live to hunt. They can dwell in apartment living but they should be given the sufficient of exercise they needed to burn off their energies and tire them out. On days where they can't hunt, they need to be taken on daily long walks, jog or several running routines. It is important for them to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as they need to understand that the leader needs to be the human.
