The American Tundra Shepherd Dog was originally developed for U.S. military use but its not-so-aggressive nature deemed the project as failure but the breed was continued to be produced. The American Tundra Shepherd Dog is a large, muscular and powerful dog with wolf-like appearance. The breed has a wedge-shaped head with a large muzzle and tight lips. Eyes are medium sized and almond shaped while nose is black. It has tucked-up belly with long, well-formed ribs. It has powerful legs with long and strong, webbed feet which are thickly padded. This large has a height in the range of 27 to34 inches and weight 110 to 140 pounds for a mature male. Females are shorter and lighter. The coat is soft and dense and is found in different colours. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC.
The American Tundra Shepherd Dog comes in many different colours. Acceptable colours for this dog are black, tan, agouti, solid black and white.
The coat of this breed is medium to long, dense and woolly. It protects the animal in extreme colds and lets it enjoy cold season without any problem.
Though originally developed for military use, the American Tundra Shepherd Dog has now become a multi-utility family pet. This dog is very loving, caring and protective of its family. It is very bright and intelligent dog with exceptional memory and can learn many different commands. Loyal and alert, the dog is stand-offish of strangers. It is eager to please its owner and family and attach itself to them strongly, specially when raised from puppyhood. The dog has an even-temperament and displays high sense of responsibility towards its human family. It will protect the family if needed. Very alert and attentive, the dog is a keen observant of its surroundings. It makes an excellent watch and guard dog. It also has a high level of scenting ability and is used in tracking and other related tasks. Other uses of this multi-utility dog includes companion, therapy, search & rescue, herding, agility and other working functions. This magnificent and graceful dog makes a great family pet.
The coat needs regular brushing specially during shedding season. Bathing should be done only when necessary. The dog should be provided shelter and plenty of water during hot season.
This dog needs early age socialization as well as obedience training. The owner should display true packleader qualities and establish himself as dog's packleader. Training is best rewarding when done in a firm, confident and consistent manner. The dog needs to have a packleader or it will try to become a packleader itself, resulting in a stubborn and willful dog. So the owner should display strong leadership skills. This breed is not for first time dog owners or feeble persons.
The American Tundra Shepherd Dog is an active and energetic breed and will need lots of physical and mental stimulation. The owner should take the dog for daily walks and provide ample playing opportunities in a fenced yard or secure open space.
