BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher (also known as Osterreichischer Kurzhaarpinscher or Österreichischer Pinscher) is a working breed from Austria. This multi-utility dog has been used in Austrian farms to protect the farms of rats and other vermin, acting as home guards, livestock guardians and drovers. The dog has peared-shaped head with short but strong muzzle. The eyes are round, big and have dark colour. The folded ears are medium length with a bat-like shape and set high on the head. The medium sized body has short and strong neck. The barrel shaped chest appears wider than it is long. Back is short and strong with tucked up loin. Forelegs are straight and firm while hind legs are slightly arched. The feet is small, round and pointing straight forward with compact arched toes. Tail is docked or curled over the back. The body of Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher appears heavier, more rugged and rectangular in appearance than a closely resemble breed, the German Pinscher. The height and weight of this breed ranges between 13-20 inches and 25-40 pounds respectively. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by FCI, APRI, ACR and DRA.

COLOR
Common colours for this breed are yellow, golden, brown, fawn, reddish brown, black, black and tan and brindle. White markings are almost always present on throat, fore chest, legs and head.

COAT
The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher has short, hard top coat as well as under coat. It is low maintenance coat.

PERSONALITY
Described as 'pleasant companion', 'playful' and 'incorruptible guard', the Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher excels in rural setting with large open spaces and lots to do. The dog is cheerful, kind and affectionate to its owners. Alert and always attentive, the dog makes an excellent watch and guard dog. It is suspicious of strangers and any change in its surrounding. This dog will bark to signal any change or an approaching stranger. It has a tendency to bark to unusual sounds. This behavior makes the dog unsuitable for apartment life. This dog may not get along well with other dogs and pets without proper socialization and training. The dog can be assertive and needs a firm and strong owner who can establish himself as dog's packleader. This dog is not for first time owners nor it is for week owners who cannot establish himself as dog's packleader.

CARE
The coat of Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher is low maintenance and needs once a week brushing only. Bathe this dog when necessary.

TRAINING
The dog is open to learning. Since this breed is intelligent and eager to please its owners, training is not very difficult but the needs a firm hand to guide the way. Without sufficient exercise, the dog will become high strung and destructive.

ACTIVITY
This working dog is accustomed to doing one task after another. It is not a laid back dog and will need lots of physical and mental activities to be happy and content. Daily walk and ample playing time in a safe and open area is necessary for this breed. The dog loves to take part in sports like agility, flyball and will be an excellent companion doing biking, jogging and almost anything the owner wants it to take part.
