The Basset fauve de Bretagne is a short legged dog breed classified as Scenthound and originating from a historical place, Brittany, in France. It is also known as 'Brittney Basset'. This dog is used in small packs to track rabbits and deers. A direct descendent of now extinct larger Grand Fauve de Bretagne, the Basset fauve de Bretagne is a rare breed outside France. The dog resembles the Basset Hound but is shorter, lighter and longer in the leg. One of the smallest hunting breeds in France, the Basset fauve de Bretagne has height and weight between 12-15 inches and 36-40 pounds respectively. The dog has dark eyes and its ears just reach end of its dark nose. The legs are straight. The coat comes in red, wheaten and fawn colours with wiry, harsh and dense fur. The Basset fauve de Bretagne is a very amusing and friendly dog when it is not tracking or working. The Basset fauve de Bretagne is NOT recognized by AKC however, FCI, ANKC, UKC and other kennel clubs recognize this dog as separate breed.
The Basset fauve de Bretagne comes in one colour that varies from fawn to dark red wheaten. A small white spot on chest is acceptable.
The coat is hard, dense and flat. It needs to be stripped twice a year.
The Basset fauve de Bretagne is a charming, lively and outgoing little hound that is full of fun and naughtiness. A scent hound through and through, the Basset fauve has a strong and determined nature when following a scent. Despite its diminutive size, it has been known to climb trees and travel fast and far following an interesting scent. Very courageous and brave, it can take on much larger animals than itself when on a hunt. On the flip side, when the dog is at home, it displays its gentle and affectionate nature. The dog loves company of children and is patient and kind to them. It makes an extremely good playmate with children. The dog can also get along well with other dogs as it is accustomed to living in a pack. The Basset fauve de Bretagne is an excellent family pet for the whole family.
The hard, coarse and dense coat needs stripping twice a year. The dog should never be taken for walk off-leashed as it will disappear in an instant following a scent.
Intelligent and eager to please, the Basset fauve de Bretagne is not difficult to train. The dog should be trained to obedience training specially due to its scent following instinct.
A working dog, the dog has lots of energy that can come into use when the dog is playing with children. It will also need to be taken for daily walks to be happy and content.
