BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Bedouin Shepherd Dog is believed to be one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. Originated in Africa, the dog is very adaptable to climate extremes. It is a medium to large size breed with a height and weight between 22-26 inches and over 50 pounds respectively. The body is muscular and strong with average size erect ears. The muzzle is par-sized while the feet is average length. The tail is short to the tail-boned and curled. The legs are relatively long. The dog has been in use for many many years by nomads of Sahara. It is used as hunting dog, flock guardian and sometimes as a predator. There are two variations of this dog. One is larger and is used to guard the camp of nomads themselves. The smaller of the two types is strong and effective herding dogs that are also used to help the shepherds with live stock. They are also used to guard the livestock against predators. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC.

COLOR
The Bedouin Shepherd Dog is found in yellow to rust-colored coat.

COAT
The coat is rough and short in length.

PERSONALITY
The Bedouin Shepherd Dog is a multi-utility dog with capabilities of being a hunting dog, flock guardian and drover, predator and watch dog. Being accustomed to working on its own, the dog is very difficult to train. The dog is instinctively alert to its surrounding and will bark to signal anything unusual. The breed tends to bark loudly and excessively. This dog is not social at all; either with humans or dog. There is very little interaction between the nomads and the dogs. They are not companion dogs at all nor are they suitable family dogs. The dog is suspicious of unknown persons. This dog can work for long hours without getting tired. It can handle very hot or very cold weather. It can adapt to any climatic change. This is not a dog suitable for family life. It is best suited to the life it has been living, the Nomadic life style.

CARE
The dog's short coat needs minimal grooming.

TRAINING
The Bedouin Shepherd Dog are perhaps one of the most difficult dogs to train. Even the most proficient of trainers have failed to trained-out their skills. This dog is best suited to Nomadic life that it is accustomed to.

ACTIVITY
As with all working dogs, the exercise needs are high. The dog needs constant mental and physical stimulation in the form of some work or activity.
