BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Belgian Griffons is a toy dog breed that is named after its country of origin, Belgium. There are three types of these dogs namely the Griffon Bruxellois, the Griffon Belge and the Petit Brabançon. All three types are identical in breed standards and the difference is only in colour and coat type. In some countries, these three types are considered ONE breed known as either Belgian or Brussels while in other places, each type is classified separately. The Belgian Griffons are smart, intelligent and alert. Affectionate, charming and curious personality of this little dog makes it a good companion dog. Very active indoors, the dog is very suitable for apartment life. The face of the Belgian Griffons has almost human expression. The large head is round with a doomed forehead. Large, black and prominent eyes are set well apart while ears are small and set very high on head. The nose is black and very short. Neck is medium length and gracefully arched. Back is short and level. Body is short and thickset. The tail is set high and docked to about one third. Forelegs are medium in length, straight and are well-muscles while hind legs are strong, stifles bent. The dog sports two types of coats; the wiry, rough and dense coat with no traces of silky hair and the smooth coat that is straight, short, tight and glossy with no traces of wiry hair. The breed has height and weight between 7-8 inches and 6-12 pounds respectively. AKC recognize this breed as ONE breed under the name 'Brussels Griffon'.

COLOR
The breed comes in different colours like red, beige, black and tan and solid black.

COAT
The two types of coats for this dog are wiry and smooth. Wiry or rough coat is dense and not too long. It contains no silky hair. The other coat is smooth type that is short, dense and straight and contains no wiry or harsh hair.

PERSONALITY
Intelligent, non-aggressive and with terrier-like disposition, the Belgian Griffon is a charming and cuddly dog that loves to snuggle and be with its owner. The dog attaches itself more with one member of the family more than the others. This makes the dog not so suitable as family pet specially for families with little children. An emotionally sensitive breed, careful early age socialization is must. The Belgian Griffon is also curious, charming and amusing. It can learn to perform tricks. Very active indoor, the dog is very suitable for apartment life style. Alert to its surroundings, the dog makes a very good watchdog. The dog has a huge heart and gets along well with other dogs and pets in the family but it may create problem for itself as it can try to dominate a much larger dog than itself.

CARE
Either type of coat needs brushing twice a week and shaping every three months.

TRAINING
The dog is very sensitive emotionally and needs careful socialization from very young age. It is very intelligent breed that can learn tricks very quickly. The dog is not difficult to train but training should be provided in gentle yet firm manner. Harsh training methods should not be employed.

ACTIVITY
The dog is very active indoor and fulfills most of its exercise needs playing in the house, it does need to be taken for daily walk to fulfill a dog's primal need to walk.
