The Bhagyari Kutta, also called Pakistani Shepherd dog, comes in three varieties; Short haired; long haired; and Bhagyari Alsatian. These dogs are very strong and powerful with a strong and athletic body. The eyes are almond shaped and the forehead is round. Nose is black while feet have very hard soles. The ears are erect. The coat is mostly black and tan. The Bhagyari Kutta originates in Pakistan and has been used for herding and protection for centuries. The word "Bhagyari" means "wolf" and "Kutta" means dog so Bhagyari Kutta means wolf dog or wolf like dog. This dog is mostly found in Sindh and Punjab regions of Pakistan. Among many different theories regarding origination of this dog, the most popular theory is that the Bhagyari Kutta originated from crossing between a wolf and a domestic dog of some kind. The theory is supported with the fact that Pakistani Bhagyari Kutta resembles very much with Pakistani Wolf. This dog is NOT recognized by AKC.
The Bhagyari Kutta is mostly found in black and tan but it is also found in gold colour. Very rarely, the Bhagyari Kutta is also seen in white colour.
The dog sports two types of coats; the long hair and the short hair. Whatever the coat type, the dog needs regular brushing.
A working breed through and through, the Bhagyari Kutta has been used for herding and the dog loves to do this job. It is a very hard working and tireless worker. Courageous, fearless and loyal, the dog is a dependable protector of sheep, property and its family. The dog is very loving and affectionate with its family and specially children. It enjoys playing with them. It may not be so friendly with strangers though and is aloof with them. Its interaction with other non-canine pets should be supervised. The Bhagyari Kutta is a very keen and quick learner and is very trainable. It is a working dog that does not like to sit idle for longer time periods. It needs to do work and enjoys working. The dog makes a very good family dog, watch and guard dog.
The Bhagyari Kutta sheds constantly. It needs to be brushed regularly. Bathe only when necessary as excessive bathing will deprive the skin of natural oil. Ears should be checked regularly and claws need to be trimmed.
The Bhagyari Kutta is very keen learner and loves to learn new things constantly. Obey to their owners, the dog is very trainable and can be easily trained.
This is very active and high energy dogs that love to do some kind of jobs on daily basis. These dogs do not like to sit idle. Constant mental and physical activity is required to keep the dog happy and content. The Bhagyari Kutta can be a great jogging, cycling, running and walking companion. It will need to be taken for daily walks when not working.
