Descendants of very large old hunting dogs, the Bleus de Gascogne is an important breed in the ancestry of many other hounds. The skull is narrow and slightly convex. It has strong and long muzzle with well developed black nose. Deep expressive eyes are dark chestnut brown colored. The long ears are drop and attached very low on the skull. Strong neck is slightly arched with a well developed dewlap. Forelegs are muscled and well boned while upper thighs in hind legs are long and strong. The back is long but firm and loin is short and broad. The chest is long and broad. The long tail is thick and carried in saber fashion. The dog has short, thick and very dense coat which is entirely mottled black and white which gives slate blue effect. This dog has been used for centuries for hunting in packs. Its main quarry was wolf but now it is used to hunt wild boar, deer, fox and hare. This dog is NOT recognized by AKC but it is recognized by FCI, UKC and DRA.
The Bleus de Gascogne has coat color that is entirely mottled black with white patches, giving a stable blue overall appearance. There are black patches on either side of the head, with a white area on head which has in it a small black oval.
The dog sports short, thick and very dense coat.
The Bleus de Gascogne is a friendly and social dog with even temperament. The dog is loving, affectionate and friendly with its master and family. It is accustomed to work in close contact with other dogs and is very sociable with them. The dog has independent nature and may not be easy to train. It will need a firm trainer to train this sometimes stubborn dog. Very active and intelligent, the Bleus de Gascogne loves to do a task and does not like to sit idle. The dog can be a good family pet with proper training and socialization.
The short dense coat may require twice a week brushing.
Known to be free spirited and independent, the Bleus de Gascogne may need a firm handler who can establish himself as dog's true packleader to train it. This dog is not easy to train and will need a dedicated and hard working trainer who is ready to put in time and effort to train this dog.
A working breed in heart and soul, the Bleus de Gascogne will love to be involved in doing some task rather than sit idle. If it is not hunting, the dog will need to play and run freely to consume its high energy levels and satisfy its working nature. Daily long walks and ample playing opportunities are most important for this breed or the dog may show undesirable behavior such as barking, digging etc.
