BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Bracco Italiano is a Hunt, Point, Retrieve (HPR) breed. It is uncommon in its native country Italy and almost unknown in the rest of the world. This dog is athletic and powerful. Longer ears and pendulous upper lips create an impression of seriousness. The body is almost square. Tail can be docked. The coat is short, dense and glossy with hard hair. The most common colours are Bianco-Arancio - White-Orange and Roano-Marrone - Roano-Brown, chestnut, or amber coloured patches on the face, ears, base of tail, and body. The dog has height and weight between 22-26 inches and 55-65 lbs. It is recognized by AKC, UKC, KC, FCI and other kennel clubs.

COLOR
Acceptable colors for this dog are white, white with chestnut patches, white with orange, white speckled with chestnut (roano-marrone).

COAT
The coat is short, dense and glossy, finer and shorter on the head, the ears, front part of the legs and feet.

PERSONALITY
The Bracco Italiano is a very good family dog due to its love for human companionship, obedience and willingness to please its owner. This loyal and loving dog gets along well with other dogs and pets and is generally kind and playful with children. It has a strong need to be close to its family and it does well as companion dog. Training and socialization from an early age is a must for this breed as the Bracco Italiano is a hunting dog. It should be taught what to chase and what not. Training this dog may become difficult if proper methods are not adopted. This dog is no doubt an excellent hunting dog but at the same time it can be a very good family pet.

CARE
The coat requires moderate grooming.

TRAINING
Training is one issue that may need to be addressed from very early age of a dog. The Bracco Italiano can be trained through positive reinforcement technique which requires the trainer to be gentle and kind to the dog. This dog is sensitive to tone of the voice and harsh tone will yield nothing out of this stubborn breed. Gentle training sessions with praise and rewards such as food rewards will make this dog very trainable.

ACTIVITY
The dog loves to hunt in the large open spaces and as such, has great demand for exercise. It needs more of a mental exercise than physical activity. The dog will love to be part of some kind of activity. Ideally, it would like to run freely in large open spaces to satisfy both its body and mental needs.
