The Chart Polski is an ancient sighthound breed that is documented in literature since 13th century. It is believed that the breed probably originated from the Asiatic sighthounds that were of Saluki type. The breed was historically used for hunting hare, fox, roe-deer, bustard and wolf. The dog is tall and lanky with a height between 27 to 32 inches and weighs between 65-95 lbs. It is a short haired sighthound that is a persistent hunter and independent dog. According to breed standards, the Chart Polski should have long, lean and strong head with flat skull and strong muzzle. The nose is large and dark. Almond-shaped large eyes are set obliquely and can be dark brown to amber colour. Expression is lively and penetrating. Ears are medium size, set at eye level and can be erect, tipped, rose or folded back. Neck is long and muscular. Topline is level to the loin, chest is spacious and well let down and the ribs are well sprung. The feathered tail is long and strong at the base. At rest, the tail hangs down while at work, it is carried high. The coat is short and smooth and can come in any colour or pattern. This dog is NOT recognized by AKC however, it is recognized by UKC, CKC and FCI.
The Chart Polski dog can come in any colour. All colours and patterns are allowed including brindle and parti-color..
The coat is short and smooth, not too harsh and not too soft with a dense undercoat that gets heavier during cold season. The coat is of variable lengths throughout the body; it is shortest on belly and legs and longest on buttocks and tail.
The Chart Polski is self assured, confident, reserved and brave. He is a fast, skillful and untiring hunter and has a lively and penetrating gaze. It is obedient and easy to train, although it can be stubborn and willful. This supremely elegant dog is a true sighthound when at home or working. It is loving, affectionate, well-mannered and quiet in the house while being careful around small children. Its favorite past time is to lay lazily on the couch and observe what is going around it. The dog is a different story when on the job. It is a relentless hunter who is described as "reacting quickly and brutally when hunting". It loves to do its job. Unlike typical sighthounds, the Chart Polski is dog aggressive and can be territorial. It is not a safe dog to keep near small pets like cats, rabbits, squirrels as it has strong hunting instincts. Early socialization and training will teach this intelligent breed not to harm family pets. The dog has strong protective instincts and makes a good watch and guard dog. This dog is not for first time or novice dog owners and needs an experienced owner to handle them in a proper way. With proper socialization, the Chart Polski makes very good multi-utility family dog.
The short coat does not need to be brushed daily. Once a week brushing will ensure the coat is clean. Bathe when necessary.
Being very bright and intelligent, the Chart Polski can start to learn far earlier than most dog puppies. It can start to understand commands from the age of 10-12 weeks. Training should be started as soon as possible.
The dog is relaxed and relatively inactive indoor so it needs to be taken for daily walks and provided with playing opportunities to burn off its energies. It can take part in coursing and other dog sports. This dog will need fair amount of physical stimulation to be happy and content.
