BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Chinese Imperial Dog is a small size sturdy little dog that is bred for companionship. This happy and playful dog was originated in Imperial Palace of China. Once believed to be same dogs as Shih Tzu, the breed has recently been accepted as a separate breed. It has a height of up to 9 inches and should weight 4-7 pounds. The head is large and round with eyes wide set apart. Eyes are large and round. Ears are dropped, well-coated, slightly below the top of the skull above eye level. Muzzle is wide and short with a moderate length nose that is in proportion to the face. Neck is long and graceful while body is short-coupled and sturdy with or without a slight tuck-up. Chest is broad and deep. Tail is set high and carried over the back. The double coat is either straight or slightly wavy and comes in all colours and markings. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC.

COLOR
All colours and markings are acceptable for this dog.

COAT
The coat is thick, dense and luxurious. It is usually flat but can also be slightly wavy. It is equally distributed all over the body. The coat has a dense undercoat.

PERSONALITY
The Chinese Imperial Dog was specially bred to be a family and companion pet. The dog has a gentle and kind approach towards its owners and family and have an even temperament. It is cheerfully playful with children but needs to be handled with care due to its small size. It is energetic dog that will enjoy playing indoor as well as sitting in the lap for as long as the owner wishes. This cute little dog has an innocent and sweet expression which makes this dog very loveable but the owner and the family should be cautious as not to let the dog get away with breaking of rules. As with all dogs, the Chinese Chongqing Dog will need a true pack leader to show it the right way or this dog may become stubborn and willful. This spunky, intelligent and social dog is a wonderful family pet with its very loving and affectionate temperament.

CARE
The coat needs to be trimmed every four to six weeks. Bathe when necessary. Nails should be trimmed regularly and ears be checked for infection.

TRAINING
The dog is intelligent as well as responsive to its master and is not a difficult dog to train. Positive training methods with praise and rewards will make this bright dog learn quickly.

ACTIVITY
The Chinese Imperial Dog needs to be taken for daily walks. The dog is relatively active indoor but still needs to be walked to satisfy its primal walking needs.
