BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The East-European Shepherd dog is also known as Russian Shepherd, Owczarek Wschodnioeuropejski and Vostochnoevropejskaya Ovcharka (VEO). Primary purpose of developing this breed was to create a dog for military use. It is a soviet dog variation of the German Shepherd but it is heavier and larger dog. This breed was created by crossing German Shepherd dogs with local Russian breeds in 1930. It is a large dog that stands between 26-30 inches and weighs between 66-132 lbs. It is larger than an average dog with harmonious built, strong, dry and well-defined muscles, sturdy bone structure and well-balanced character with a confident demeanor. It has a massive and wedge shaped head with long, erect ears and dark oval shaped eyes. Nose is large and black. Back is strong, broad and long with short, wide, well-muscled loin. The chest is moderately wide with tucked-up belly. The dog has medium length dense coat with sufficient undercoat. Usual coat colours include black, black and tan, black and red, brown, gray and red, sable, sometimes with dark facial mask. Though very popular as watch and guard dog in Russia, this dog is still relatively unknown outside its country of origin and is considered a rare breed in the outside world. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by CKC, DRA and RKF.

COLOR
This dog comes in different colours. Acceptable colours for this dog include black and tan, black and red, blanket-back black, solid black and solid liver.

COAT
The coat is medium length with ample undercoat.

PERSONALITY
Bred to be a guard dog and protector of its owner, the dog is fierce, courageous, loyal and dedicated to its master. It has an excellent temperament as guard dog. Though very friendly, obedient and playful to its family, the dog is unsure of strangers. It can be aggressive if the situation demands. When guarding, this dog is usually quiet and silent which makes it a very good and effective watch and guard dog. It is a loyal and devoted breed that will protect its master and family on all costs. Considered to be perhaps the most intelligent of Russian guard dogs. The dog is well mannered and even tempered when with its family but may not be suitable for families with small children as its playful jumping could prove harmful given the dog's large size and massive body. Its obedience and trainability makes it one of the most favored breeds for dog trainers.

CARE
The East-European Shepherd will need daily brushing as it is a heavy shedder. Bathing twice or thrice a month should do good to coat and keep it clean and healthy.

TRAINING
This dog is highly trainable and together with its obedient nature and above average intelligence, the dog is very easy to train. It is one of the most favored dogs for dog trainers due to its high trainability . As with all breeds, the owner or trainer must acquire the role of a true pack leader for this breed and win its confidence and respect.

ACTIVITY
As a working dog, the East-European Shepherd has high exercise needs. This hard working dog will be happiest when it has some task to do. Daily long walks and ample play time is must for this breed to keep the dog from boredom and consequently destructive behavior.
