The East Russian Coursing Hounds is a thin, tall and very elegant breed originating in Russia. It is known to be one of the most aristocratic dogs around. This breed originated by crossing of the Sloughi or the Arab Galgo dog with Russian Hounds. The dog was used to hunt hares and foxes using its agility, speed and sighting skills as well as force that these dogs have. It is a tall and thin dog with long and coarse coat that comes with a dense undercoat. It stands between 22-28 inches. This dog is NOT recognized by AKC.
Colours for this dog can be tan, gray, black and tan, solid gray, solid black, fawn and white.
This dog has long and rough coat that comes with dense and thick undercoat.
Calm and composed, the East Russian Coursing Hounds is human oriented and enjoys human companionship. The dog is eager and willing to please as well as obedient to its master, making it an easy to train dog. It is a hard working dog that will love to go on long walks or jogs when not doing his duty as a hunter. Though loving and friendly to its master and people it knows, the dog is suspicious and wary of strangers due to its territorial instincts. Early age socialization and training is a must for this dog to make it more adaptable to different environments. With proper training and socialization, the East Russian Coursing Hounds makes a very good family, guardian of the house and family and great hunting dog.
Long coat of this breed will need regular brushing to keep it clean and dirt free. Bathe only when needed.
Being obedient and willing to please its master, the dog can be easily trained with positive training sessions. Praise and reward will work wonders with this breed but the trainer must win the confidence and respect of this dog first and establish himself as dogs' true pack leader.
As a working dog, the East Russian Coursing Hound breed will be happy when assigned a job to do. This high energy and lively dog does not like to sit idle for long time periods. When not working, the dog will need to run freely as well as go for daily walk. It can be a very good jogging companion. Though it may live in an apartment, the East Russian Coursing Hound will be best suited to families with large yard where the dog can run and play as it likes.
