BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The French White and Orange Hound (also called Francais Blanc et Orange) is a large and rustic dog originating in France. Its name depicts its unique coat colour. This large scenthound is an admirable hunter with a calm temperament which makes it an excellent companion dog as well. This dog stands between 25 to 28 inches. It has a large and longish head with a slightly doomed skull and well marked stop. Full lips give a square shape to longish muzzle. Black or brown nose is well developed and comes with great sensitivity to different scents. Dark brown eyes are large while longish ears are set low on the head, flopped and slightly curled. Strong neck is straight and long and blends smoothly into the body. Fore and hind quarters are very muscular and strong, giving the dog necessary propelling power and fast speed. The dog has broad chest with well rounded ribs. The back is broad and straight with slightly arched loin. The tail is quite long, sometimes with few longer and coarser round the tail slightly off standing hairs (like ears of grain) towards the tip. This breed has a short and fine coat that comes in a distinguished orange and white colour pattern. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by UKC and FCI kennel clubs.

COLOR
The colour for this dog is white-lemon or white with orange with the restriction that orange should not be too dark to look red. The skin under white hair is white and orange under orange hair.

COAT
The French White and Orange Hound has a short and fine coat that is not too thick. It is a low maintenance coat.

PERSONALITY
As a hunting dog, the French White and Orange Hound is second to none!. With its exceptional scenting sense and great stamina, the dog is highly valued by hunters. It is a tireless worker with great endurance and can work for longer periods of time without needing breaks. Powerful and agile, the dog is regarded as an accomplished hunter of small and large game. Though pack hunting dogs seldom make good family pets, the French White and Orange Hound is among the rare pack hunting dogs that are very good natured when assigned the role of a family pet. Very loyal and devoted to its master and family, this dog displays even temperament, patience and calmness that qualifies this breed as an excellent family companion. This dog is very reliable and playful with children and gets along well with other dogs in the family. Its intelligence and eager to please attitude makes this dog very trainable. It loves human attention and forms a strong bond with its master and family. This social dog is very adaptable to different situations and while it is a non-aggressive breed, the dog does have watch guard qualities as it sounds an alarm when a stranger approaches near. The French White and Orange Hound is a great family dog for active owners who are willing to provide this active breed all the necessary exercises.

CARE
Short and fine coat of the breed is low maintenance. Weekly brushing of the coat with hard bristle brush will keep the coat clean and healthy as well as distribute skin oils evenly. Bathe is needed only when necessary though a thorough rubdown of the coat with a wet cloth or chamois will keep the coat shiny.

TRAINING
This breed is willing and eager to please and impress its owner and will respond to positive training sessions. High levels of intelligence and lack of stubborn behavior makes this dog a quick learner. Harsh methods or heavy-handed training is not required with this gentle and sensitive dog.

ACTIVITY
Though the may appear relatively relaxed and laid back when indoor, it is a different dog when outdoors. As a high energy breed, the dog will need lots of physical and mental stimulation. It is happiest when assigned a job to do. The dog may not suit apartment life if the owner is reluctant to take it for daily exercise and play. Though best suited to rural or suburban setting, it can adjust in a family with a large yard where this dog can play and run as it likes.
