BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The German Rough-haired Pointing Dog is also known as 'Deutsch Stichelhaar' and 'German Brokencoated Pointer' . It is a strong pointing dog with medium to large size and comes in a distinctive stiff, hard coat with moderate beard. This breed is the oldest German Rough-coated Pointing dog. In 1888, the cynologist Hans von Kadisch managed to prove that this breed is the rough-coated variety of the German partridge dog ('Hühnerhund') and not just another variety of the Short-Haired Pointing Dog. That means, the Deutsch Stichelhaar has not been newly created, but has been re-developed from the very few specimens still found in the country. The dog stands between 23 to 27 inches and weighs around 44 pounds. The head is in proportion to the body with a slightly rounded and broad skull. Moderately wide long and powerful muzzle has straight nose bridge. The nose is light to dark brown in colour. Moderately set, slightly oval shaped eyes are brown coloured but can be lighter in accordance to coat colour. Yellow eye colour is a fault. Medium length hair are set high and hang down smoothly close to the head. Ears are moderately broad and have rounded tips.Medium length strong neck is slightly arched and widens smoothly into a deep and broad chest. The chest is well developed and has well sprung ribs. Topline is straight and slopes slightly backwards. Back is straight, strong and firm with well muscled loins. Medium length strong-based tail is set moderately; neither too high nor too low. It is either carried straight or slightly bent upwards. The close-fitting coat is stiff, harsh and bristly. It comes in brown and roan colours with or without white or brown patches. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC.

COLOR
The German Rough-haired Pointing Dog comes in brown with or without white patches, brown roan with or without brown patches and light roan with or without brown patches.

COAT
The coat is harsh, stiff and close-fitting over the body. It is slightly longer on shoulders and underside of the body. There is a barely visible undercoat all over the body as well. On the muzzle the hair forms a moderately developed beard. On the bridge of the nose it is short and harsh, neither long nor soft, nor falling. On the skull the hair is close lying, short and harsh. On the ears it is slightly longer than in the German Short-Haired Pointer and not as harsh as on the top of the head.

PERSONALITY
The German Rough-haired Pointing Dog is a balanced, courageous but self-controlled and versatile hunting dog that was developed with the aim to create a single dog that would be able to point, track and retrieve the game from water, forest and land. Even tempered and an energetic and determined hunter, the dog is full of life. As a well-balanced and calm breed, the German Rough-haired Pointing Dog is robust, courageous and controlled dog. It is a one man dog and will only obey and take commands from his master. A thorough and thorough hunting dog, the German Rough-haired Pointing Dog will need early socialization and training to become a reasonable family pet. Though the dog is friendly, it has an aggressive nature towards strangers. It can get along with children and other dogs if socialized from puppyhood. This dog is not for first time or weak owners. This enthusiastic dog is a great hunter but same can not be said for its capabilities as a family companion.

CARE
The coat will need reasonable grooming.

TRAINING
The German Rough-haired Pointing Dog will need firm and consistent training. The owner or trainer must act as a true packleader of this dog and win its respect and command otherwise, this dog will not respond to a weak and timid owner.

ACTIVITY
A high energy dog, the German Rough-haired Pointing Dog requires lots of exercises and physical activities. It is not a dog for apartment living but will need a large open area to play and run as it likes.
