The Golden Sheltie is a mix between a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Shetland Sheep dog or Sheltie. They are called hybrid dogs due to their origination from two different pure breeds. They are medium size dogs with an average height and weight of 18 to 22 inches and 30 to 55 pounds or more. They are alert, intelligent, loyal and social dogs that lively and friendly with all family members. They are a good choice as family dogs.
They are found in different colours like black, white, black and white, black white and tan, light to dark golden and blue and sable or any mix of these colours.
Their coat can have rough or wavy outer coat that is water-repellent and soft and thick under coat.
The Golden Sheltie dogs are very kind and friendly. They are very lively and energetic dogs that are equally good with all family members. These dogs are exceptionally great with small children if early socialization is provided. They are very eager to please and love to get attention. They can be wary of strangers but with proper introduction, they will immediately become friends. They may have herding instincts of a Sheltie and they may try to herd small animals, children and even cars. Proper training will take care of this behavior. They are extremely intelligent dogs with both parent breeds ranked as number four(GR) and six (Sheltie) in working intelligence tests. They are very easy to train and will learn and perform tricks. They are excellent, non-aggressive dogs to have as family pets.
Their play with children should be supervised as they may have a tendency to try and herd them. Their coat requires regular grooming and once a month bath.
Their intelligence and obedient nature makes them very trainable dogs. These dogs are extremely easy to train as they like to learn and please their owners.
The Golden Sheltie dogs are active and lively and will require fair amount of activities to keep themselves happy. They like to work and get involved in things both mentally and physically. Daily walks with sufficient playing opportunities are important to keep these dogs from boredom.
