BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Jack Russell Terrier is a pure breed dog named after the clergyman Rev. John Russell. Bred as a hunting dog, the dogs needed to be long-legged enough to keep up with the hounds. They are cheerful, loving, happy, loyal dogs. The small size of this breed makes them perfect for apartment or small space living. However, as working dogs, they need a more challenging job to burn off energy. Owners of Jacks need to be confident pack leaders as this breed tends to take over their pack if not trained well.

COLOR
This breed's colors are usually dominated by white with markings of tan, black or brown.

COAT
The Jack's coat is smooth in nature. Usually short, it provides protection from other elements and undergrowth.

PERSONALITY
The Jack Russell Terrier is a loving, cheerful, loyal and happy dog. They are spirited and obedient but they are brave as well. A well-balanced Jack Russell Terrier is friendly and gentle with kids. Kids should also be extra gentle with the Jacks.

CARE
Regular grooming is important for this breed's varying coat types. For the rough coat and the broken coat, the Jack Russell Terrier must strip the coat.

TRAINING
The Jack Russell Terrier breed are highly trainable and can perform tricks that they usually are trained for a role on TV or movies. Socialization is a must for the Jack's training as their hunting instincts tend to make them aggressive with other dogs. They should be trained to be pack members as they tend to take over a house if allowed to. If they do, unpleasant behaviors could arise.

ACTIVITY
This breed will need to be it's regular challenging exercise. As they are bred for hunting, they need a more challenging work out compared to other small dogs. They were bred to be working dogs, so having a challenging task is what keeps them balanced and happy dogs.
