The Jackshund is a mix of a purebred Dachshund and a purebred Jack Russell Terrier. They are called hybrid dogs due to their origination from two different pure breeds. The Jackshund dogs are small to medium in size, standing up to 18 inches and weighing around 15 pounds. These hybrids are courageous, loyal, devoted and social. They have characteristics and features from both parent breeds.
The Jackshund dogs are found in different colours. Common colours for these dogs are black, black and tan, brown, red and white or a mix of these colours.
Their coat can be double-coated broken coat with smooth and rough hair like a Jack Terrier or they can have one of three types of Dachshund coat, i.e. smooth coat, long-haired and wire-haired.
The Jackshund dogs are active, social, loyal, cheerful, intelligent and brave dogs. They like human companionship and enjoy their company and do not like to be left alone for extended time periods. These hybrids are good with children and other dogs and pets in the family with proper training. They have Dachshund character to chase after a small animal or ball with ferocity. This calls for proper early age training for dog to inhibit this trait. They can also be stubborn and willful and will need firm owner to display true pack leader qualities to train these dogs. They are not easy dogs to train. The Jackshund dogs can take on bigger dogs than themselves and should be leashed when they are taken outdoor. These dogs are not for first time or inexperienced owners. The Jackshund dogs are alert to their surroundings and make good watchdogs. They are loving and affectionate to their family and familiar guests but wary of strangers. With proper obedience and behavior training, these dogs make very active and loving family pets.
Care should be taken when they are playing with children. They can have different types of coat and every coat has different grooming and brushing needs.
These hybrids are not easy to train due to their stubborn behavior. The trainer needs to establish himself as true pack leader and indulge these dogs into firm and consistent training to get desired results.
The Jackshund dogs are active and lively. They will need daily long walks or jog and running and playing time to relieve their high energy. They will develop undesirable behaviors such as chewing or digging holes and barking and sometimes, aggression if not properly exercised.
