BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Kerry Wheaten dog is a mix between a purebred Kerry Blue Terrier and a purebred Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. They are called hybrid dogs due to their origination from two different pure breeds. The Kerry Wheaten dogs are small to medium in size, standing at 20 inches maximum and weighing around 33 to 45 pounds. They are loving, affectionate and highly active dogs. They can fit into an apartment life if their exercise needs are fulfilled although they would ideally need a yard to play.

COLOR
The Kerry Wheaten dogs are found in different colours of their parent breeds. Common colours for these dogs are black, blue, brown, gray, red and white.

COAT
These hybrids can have dense and medium coat of the Kerry Blue Terrier or thin and silky Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier coat.

PERSONALITY
The Kerry Wheaten dogs are loving, affectionate, loyal and protective of their family. They are family oriented dogs that like human company. These dogs are very gentle and patient with children. They are not as friendly to other dogs and cats in the family if not properly socialized from puppyhood. These dogs are not easy to train as both parent breeds are head-strong and so are these hybrids. They would need gentle, persistent and patient trainer to train them as harsh methods will make them aggressive. The Kerry Wheaten dogs are very brave and alert. They will alert the family of a stranger's arrival and will generally greet them. They are not suitable guard dogs but will make good watch dogs. They are high energy and very active dogs that need lots of physical exercise, the lack of which will cause behavioral problems in these dogs.

CARE
They should be properly socialized with dogs and cats in the family as they have a strong prey drive and will chase small animals. Their coat will need to be brushed regularly.

TRAINING
Not the easiest dogs to train, these head-strong and willful dogs will need consistent training with a patient trainer. They are trainable.

ACTIVITY
The Kerry Wheaten dogs need lots of exercise and physical stimulation. A daily leashed walk and ample playing time will be necessary for these dogs.
