BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Maltipom is a cross between a purebred Maltese and a purebred Pomeranian. They are called hybrid dogs due to their origination from two different pure breeds. These hybrids are small in size with an average height of 8-10 inches and weight around 4-8 pounds. These dogs have alert and expressive face that is almost fox-like. Their body is sturdy and compact. These dogs have long and silky coat inherited from both parent breeds. The Maltipoms are naturally playful and affectionate. They like to live in close contact with human. These dogs are good with children. They are active dogs that love to play outdoor.

COLOR
These hybrids are found mostly in white color with brown or black markings but they are also seen in gray and brown with white markings. They can also have any of the Pomeranian colors like black, black and tan, blue and red.

COAT
Their coat is medium to long in length with silky, soft and fine fur.

PERSONALITY
The Maltipoms are excellent companion dogs as they like to be near their family. They are very social and alert dogs and mix well with all ages. These dogs are very friendly, playful and gentle with children, but children should be taught not to rough-handle these little dogs. They will socialize well with other dogs and pets in the family. The Maltipoms are alert and attentive. They will bark to announce the arrival of an stranger, thus making good watch dogs. These dogs would need to go for daily walk to be fit and happy. The Maltipoms make excellent family and companion dogs.

CARE
Their voluminous coat requires constant maintenance because it tends to grow long and shed constantly. Sufficient time and attention should be devoted in brushing the coat every day. The use of dry shampoo is also a great help. Eyes and ears should be cleaned daily to prevent infection.

TRAINING
The Maltipom are best housebroken early using the crate method. Early and continuous socialization is recommended to minimize separation anxiety as the dogs grow older. It is a breed that is really good in picking up tricks, although owners need to be mindful all the time that they have to be dominant, and not let the Maltipoms have their own way.

ACTIVITY
A daily walk will keep them happy and content. If this is not possible, tricks and lively games indoors will allow them to expend extra energy and keep them stimulated.
