BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Mountain View Cur is a hard hunting dog with balanced temperament. It is a rather new breed that was developed in late 1980s by a husband-wife couple of Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Bloodgood in United States. The main purpose for developing this breed was to create a treeing dog with superior scenting abilities and to track, trail and hunt small and large game. This dog was developed from a strain of Mountain Cur breed. It is an exceptional hunting and treeing dog with its courageous, unintimidating and brave nature. This dog can bravely take on game much larger its size and is an avid hunter of hare, squirrel, raccoon, coyote, rabbits, hare, turkey, grouse, opossum and pheasants. This is a hardy breed that works tirelessly in harshest conditions and most unfriendly weather conditions. The dog stands between 18-26 inches and weighs between 30-60 lbs. It has a wide, dome flat head that leads to heavy muzzle. Dark coloured predominant eyes are very expressive. Small to medium size ears are set high, dropped and hang close to the head. This strong boned and well muscled dog comes with strong muscular neck, straight and strong back and deep chest. Tail is naturally bobbed. Speed is an asset of this dog and it is enhanced by the presence of cat-like paws and straight, strong and very muscular legs. It has a double coat with undercoat being short and soft while outer coat is short and smooth or rough. Colours include brindle, solid black, black brindle and yellow. Though this breed is noted for remarkable uniformity in its appearance, it is NOT recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club.

COLOR
Most dogs are born in light brown to rich dark yellow colour but all black, all brindle and black & brindle are not uncommon either. White spots on chest, feet and/or muzzle are common in this breed.

COAT
This breed has a short double coat. Topcoat is short and rough or smooth in texture while undercoat is short, soft and dense.

PERSONALITY
The Mountain View curs have an excellent disposition with people. They are especially good with children and love being around them. These curs are very protective of their family and make wonderful watch dogs. They are able to sense trouble and will attempt to keep it at bay. This dog is always eager to please and will do anything for their masters. They enjoy being part of a family. The Mountain View cur is a very independent dog and hardly ever needs to be kept on a leash. They are very obedient animals. These hunting dogs will be protective of their hunting companions as well as be vigilant watch dogs. They have the ability to track any game and will give a locating bark once they have spotted the game. The Mountain View cur will essentially hunt tree animals but if trained they will hunt other game as well. The Mountain View cur is highly intelligent dog. They are thus sought after for rescue missions. These dogs have a knack for sniffing out trouble and will do what they can to help, if they don't sense a threat. The Mountain View cur can be trained to swim as well as rescue drowning people. This dog makes a very loving and affectionate companion. They will not enjoy being in a closed space. They like the great outdoors and will enjoy being out most of the time. They are happy while working and can even be trained to protect herds. This dog is very hyper and needs ample amount of exercise to keep them calm.

CARE
Its short coat is another advantage that the owner will enjoy as these dogs do not require much grooming. Their easy to maintain coat will be in top condition with once a while brushing. The dog will need to be bathed when it becomes really dirty as frequent bathing is bound to strip the coat of its natural oils.

TRAINING
Eager to please and highly intelligent, the Mountain View Cur is an easy dog to train. These dogs have been successfully trained to rescue drowning people, work as narcotics detectors, in search and rescue operations. The owner or trainer must be gentle yet firm when training this dog and should use positive reinforcement methods.

ACTIVITY
The Mountain View Cur is a highly energetic breed and certainly not for apartment living. This dog will need some work to do to keep away boredom. It enjoys playing games and going on walks or even jogs. The dog will need large open space to run and play at will to let its excessive energy out.
