The Mucuchies (also known as Venezuelan Sheepdog or the Perro de los Peramos) is a Venezuelian breed of dog with European ancestry. Though this breed is around for thousands of years, its exact origination and progenitors are still doubtful. These herding dogs are believed to have evolved from Great Pyrenees, Spanish Mastiff and Algerian Mastiff as well as from Aidi and Pyrenean. It is a rustic looking dog that may not be as large as its progenitors but it is a powerful and very versatile working dog. The dog comes with a long, wedge-shaped head and slightly rounded forehead with wrinkled brows. Triangular shaped, medium sized ears hang down close to the cheek. Round eyes are very expressive. The dog has a black nose. It has a short but very muscular neck. Its robust body has straight and broad back, deep chest with flat ribs and obliquely placed shoulders. The long tail that reaches the hocks, is carried hanging down when this dog is at rest and raised over the back when the dog is in action. Though this dog has a short coat, it appears long due to long feathering hair on the limbs. The heavy and thick hair can be straight or slightly wavy. Usually this dog comes in pure white and sometimes in white with with markings of varying shades of honey, grey or black. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club.
This dog comes in pure white or white with spots of different colours like honey, different shades of gray all the way to black.
The coat of this dog is quite short but appears long due to excessive feathering. The heavy and thick hair can be straight or slightly wavy.
Noted for its affectionate, loving and gentle temperament, the Mucuchies form a strong bond with its family and thrive on attention and love extended to it. This dog is specially kind and gentle with children. It is a very loyal and active dog breed that will protect its family and possession with courage and bravery. With a high protective instinct, the dog is highly suspicious and wary of strangers. It can be aggressive towards strangers. As such, early age socialization and obedience training is a must for this breed to enable it to be friendly or atleast not aggressive towards strangers. Training can be a difficult task with this dog as it is very stubborn and gets bored with repetitive training routines. Being a working dog, it needs lots of physical and mental stimulation to be happy and fit. This noble dog has been depicted as a hero in the venezuelan struggle for liberation along with legendary Simon Boliver. Legend has it that Nevado has saved Bolivar's life many times. The Mucuchies makes a very good watch/guard dog and very loving family companion for active owners and families.
Short-coated Mucuchies has very little grooming needs as its coat is easy to take care of with weekly brushing. This active breed will need large open spaces to run and play and should not be confined in small places like apartments.
This dog may prove to be a challenge to train. Despite its intelligent and bright nature, the dog can be stubborn and willful. It can become impatient and bored with repetitive exercise routines. This breed needs a strong and confident owner who can guide the dog with strong hand.
Being an active, hyper and working dog, the Mucuchies needs large open spaces and opportunities to run and play as it likes. It will constantly be running around or doing some work to put its excessive energy levels to some use. This breed does not like to be cooped up in a small space and is not suitable for apartment living. This breed will need to be taken on long daily walks, it can be a very good jogging and/or hiking partner.
