BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Native American Indian Dog is a very rare, almost extinct breed of dog used by the native Americans for a variety of purposes including, pulling travois, hunting, babysitting the very young and elderly and guarding the village. This breed is very rare with risks of extinction; it was used by the native Americans to pack a backpack with family possessions and to pull travois. Back in the days, these dogs were used for hunting all sorts of games, ranging from moose to rabbit; an interesting aspect, they were taught even how to fish so as you can see it is a very versatile dog, capable of adapting to any given environment. Some people affirm that the original Native American Indian Dogs have been extinct and they say that all dogs that are sold under this name are simple recreations. Thanks to the fact that they are webbed feet, these dogs are capable of pulling large and heavy loads and have good swimming abilities.

COLOR
They come in white to silver, gray/black, tan, rust/black, broken pattern, black, tortoise shell and the rare blue or red coloring.

COAT
Their coat is medium to long with a heavy, dense undercoat that sheds once a year.

PERSONALITY
These breeds are highly intelligent, very intuitive and sensitive animal. They are very loyal to the family members and are good even with children. They are non aggressive breeds, also great with other household pets as well as large livestock.

CARE
They require little grooming. People with allergies or asthma to dog dander or hair may be able to own this breed, they may be considered hypoallergenic.

TRAINING
These breeds are highly intelligent and very easy to train.

ACTIVITY
These dogs aren't recommended for apartment living or a house dog because they need a wide area, securely fenced yard, in which they can play and run. If you do lock him in a crate, the Native American Indian Dog will believe that he is being punished, not knowing what he has done to deserve this. They need moderate exercise but their need for this can range from dog to dog.
