BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Northeasterly Hauling Laika is one of the six Laika breeds that originated in Siberia. Four of those six breeds are pure hunting dogs like Siberian Laika, West Siberian Laika East, European and Russian Laika, Karelo Finnish Laika while Nenets Herding Laika is a herding breed. The Northeasterly Hauling Laika is a pure sled dog that is used to transport medicines and goods across to extreme parts. This large dog was developed using different local drafting dogs and stands between 23-27 inches with a weight between 75-110 lbs. The dogs have a long wolf-like head. Their eyes are dark in color. Their ears are long, triangular shaped, and stiffly erect. The dog's muzzle is of medium size and tapering to a point. The nose is black and colored according to coat. The dog's neck is thickly muscled and strong. The chest is oval and deep, with a belly drawn up slightly. The back is broad and long, with top-line slightly sloping from withers to tail. The forelegs are straight and muscular. Hind legs are firm and well muscled. Coat colors vary from solid white or black, over reddish gray to black & tan or pied. The tail types can be sickle, curled or straight. The Northeasterly Hauling Laika is an essential helpmate of the arctic people with its endurance and ability to live in harsh cold temperatures that sometimes reach as low as -30C. This dog furnishes warmth to his master when, during a sudden blizzard, every living creature digs into a snow drift. And he can unerringly find his way home even in blinding snow. Hauling dogs often second as hunting dogs as well. A team of six to ten Hauling Laikas, pulling a load of 88-110 pounds per dog, may average three to four miles per hour. This figures to 40-48 miles a day for a four to six day trip in -40 to -50 degree weather, all on only about three pounds of fish a day per dog! Thus to this day, the northern peoples of the Soviet Union love and respect their amazing helpmates. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club.
