BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Patterdale Terrier breed is a pure breed dog which originated from different strains of Terriers that existed in each isolated village in the north of England. They were bred to be working dogs which made them very good at hunting and watchdog skills. They are laid back, loyal and very brave. They need a human as a pack leader to train them patiently especially with obedience. They are particularly hard and persistent which requires a pack leader who is strong-willed and confident. Not recommended for the average pet owner as they need consistent challenges with mental and physical exercise to keep them from boredom. Lack of exercise and boredom could result to behavioral problems in the future.

COLOR
The Patterdale Terrier's color can be black, red, liver, grizzle, black and tan, and bronze, either solid or with some white markings on chest and feet.

COAT
This breed's coat can either be smooth or broken. For both coat types, there is always a dense undercoat that is short. The smooth coat is coarse, dense and stiff that falls back in place when lifted. Also, it is straight without waves. The broken coat, on the other hand, is an intermediate coat that has longer guard hairs than the other coat type. The guard hairs are wiry and coarse to the touch while sometimes could be wavy. The broken coated dog might have facial coat like that of a human face where it forms a beard, mustache and eye brows.

PERSONALITY
The Patterdale Terrier breed enjoys relaxing at home and are not as yappy as other terrier breeds. The outdoors changes this breeds behavior as most of it's energy are consumed. They may be small in size but they are really good in hunting. They need an intensive type of work-out to consume their stored energy. If they get bored or they can't satisfy their exercise needs, it could lead to unwanted behavior that could escalate if not corrected.

CARE
Being short coated, only a little grooming is needed to keep them in top shape.

TRAINING
The Patterdale Terrier, although small in size, needs to be walked emphasizing that they are pack members - walking beside or behind the person holding the leash. They are not easy to train for obedience. Because of their hunting skills, this breed should never be trusted with pets besides another dog. Training should be done in a firm, confident, consistent manner while emphasizing they are pack members to avoid behavioral problems in the future. This dog needs an experienced dog owner who can give the right amount of training challenge along with mental and physical exercise.

ACTIVITY
This breed is often thought to be in the Toy group but the amount of exercise they need are pretty intense compared to other breeds of the same size. Their exercise should also be able to satisfy their hunting instincts. Like a switch, the Patterdale Terrier can be lazy while indoors while the exact opposite once outside. They like hiking and running.
