BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Pugairn is a small, sprightly cross between the Cairn Terrier and the Pug. Adorable-looking and energetic, the Pugairn possesses characteristics of its parent breeds that make it an good indoor family dog and an active, sociable, outdoor playmate. The Cairn Terrier is the oldest of all Scottish Terriers, and was originally bred to hunt den-living farm pests such as foxes. The word "cairn" refers to man-made stone piles common in the Scottish Highlands. These were often inhabited by animals such as badgers and foxes, which was a bane to nearby farms. The Cairn Terrier is a small yet fearless dog that is very loyal to and protective of its owners. Bred to hunt, they are possessed of great instincts and big stores of energy. Their size notwithstanding, they are definitely not pampered and delicate lapdogs kept indoors for long stretches of time. The Pug is a breed originally from China, exclusively for holy personages and the Imperial Family. Another small dog with a big personality, Pug is prized for winning sociability and friendliness, and its occasional antics that can amuse and entertain. The Pug is a great indoor companion that thrives on affection and returning it.

COLOR
The Pugairn will come in shades of gray, yellow, brown and off-white, or in brindle of these colors, while solid colors such as white or black will be unlikely. A singular characteristic about the Pugairn's coat, if it is brindled, is that it may change colors as it ages, e.g., gray darkening to black or lightening to silver.

COAT
The coat, if a blend of the two parent breeds, will be slightly longer and rougher than the Pug's coat, and will offer more protection against cold weather. If an undercoat is present, it will be fluffy and dense.

PERSONALITY
The Pugairn is an ideal mix of an active, outdoor breed and a laid-back, easygoing companion. Its sweet and gentle nature will appeal to kids, as well as its penchant to please through play and tricks. The terrier in the Pugairn will express itself by bold behavior towards other dogs and people, but it will not be generally aggressive, just curious and sociable. Other pets and dogs in the house will not be a problem.

CARE
Hand-stripping a thick fur is best to help remove dead or shed hair, instead of just clipping. Brushing once a day will help get rid of dust and dirt. Frequent bathing will dry out the skin. Dry shampoo in between wet baths can help neutralize odors and be friendlier to the skin.

TRAINING
Of medium- to above-average intelligence, the Pugairn will not be difficult to train. Handling should start when young, and the pick-up will be faster as compared to when the dog is older and has developed a streak of stubbornness or independence.

ACTIVITY
Of medium- to above-average intelligence, the Pugairn will not be difficult to train. Handling should start when young, and the pick-up will be faster as compared to when the dog is older and has developed a streak of stubbornness or independence.
