BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Pugese is a cross between the Pug and the Chinese Crested. As often happens with cross-breeding, one parent's traits might show more than the other, or an equal mix of traits could be inherited by the offspring. This could be made more interesting by the fact that with one parent, the relatively rare Chinese Crested, two types of dogs could come from the same litter --- the Hairless and the Powderpuff. Going by the name, the Hairless has most of its skin exposed, and long silky fur grow only on the head (crest), the tail (plume), and the paws (socks). The Powderpuff, on the other hand, is adequately covered by its soft, fine coat. Despite the name, the Chinese Crested is believed to have originated in Africa, and was only brought out of the continent by Chinese trading ships. The Chinese Crested is a small, finely-boned dog that is good-natured and loves to play. The Pug originated from China, as the privileged pets of the Chinese Imperial Palace. Energetic and highly social, they are prized for their fun and affectionate personality.

COLOR
The Pugese can come in a variety of colors, as especially the Chinese Crested does not have any one color that it commonly comes in. If it takes after the Hairless Chines Crested, the soft skin can range from flesh to black.

COAT
A single coat can come from either the Pug or the Hairless, and can be short, or medium to long. A double coat will be from the Powderpuff, and the top layer will be considerably longer, and fine in texture. The undercoat will be woolly and prone to matting.

PERSONALITY
The Pugese is a charming, lovable, energetic dog that loves attention and affection. They will play, caper, and do tricks if it means applause and appreciation. Ideal for older children, the Pugese could still be vulnerable to injury during play because of their size. Younger children should be supervised with them. The Pugese can become very attached to their owners, and will not react well to being left alone for extended periods of time. It is a friendly dog and will do well with other dogs or pets. Alert and fairly intelligent, the Pugese is not barky, and is perfect for apartment or condominium-dwelling.

CARE
The exposed skin is as sensitive as a human baby's, and could be easily sunburned. Sunblock is recommended for the outdoors, although products used should be checked for lanolin, as this can produce allergic reaction. A double coat should be brushed daily or every other day, to take care of shed hairs. The Pugese is not a smelly dog; frequent bathing is unnecessary. but if the dog is hairless, daily bathing plus moisturizer on the skin can be part of grooming. Teeth should be regularly checked and brushed to minimize decay.

TRAINING
The Pugese is a small dog with a big personality. Socialization from puppyhood is importance, for the dog to grow up confident and outgoing. Firm leadership needs to be established; otherwise, this small dog will develop the idea that he is boss, and will start to display bad behavior, such as growling or snapping. Training for basic commands and tricks can be accomplished with rewards and praise; the Pugese is a performer at heart and loves to please.
