BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Rastreador Brasileiro is also called Urrador and Urrador Americano and is translated as Brazilian Tracker in English. It is a large Brazilian scenthound hunting dog breed. Though initially recognized by FCI in 1967, the entire breeding stock was wiped out due to outbreak of disease and overdose of insecticide. Consequently, the FCI de-listed this dog declaring it extinct. Since then, efforts are underway to re-create this breed from a mix of American Foxhound, Black and tan Coonhound, Petit Blue de Gascogne, English Foxhound and American Bluetick Coonhound. The Rastreador Brasileiro is a large hunting dog of scenthound type. The dog stands between 24.5 to 26.5 inches and weighs about 50-60 lbs. This breed comes with a flat head, metallic colour yellow eyes, long and pendulous ears and medium size muzzle. It has black or self-colored nose, muscular, thick and slightly arched neck, level topline, powerful and deep chest with well sprung ribs, straight and strong back and muscular loin. It is a short-coated breed with a coarse coat that comes in white (sometimes brown) with blue, chestnut, or black markings. This breed is still in the development phase and is not recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club.

COLOR
The Rastreador Brasileiro comes in spotted coloring. White or sometimes brown is the base color with markings of blue, chestnut or black.

COAT
This breed sports a short and rough coat that is easy to maintain.

PERSONALITY
The Rastreador Brasileiro was an avid hunter of medium and small game. It had a keen sense of smell and was able to track game from far distance. With their intelligence and unique ability to sense people's feelings, the dogs made a very loving and devoted companion as well. It had an eager to please nature and craved for attention and love. The Rastreador Brasileiro was gentle with older and considerate children but wary and suspicious of strangers. It made an excellent family pet as well as a great watch and guard dog.

CARE
This short-coated breed was easy to groom with its low maintenance coat.

TRAINING
The Rastreador Brasileiro was a strong-willed and independent dog that was hard to train if the trainer was not an experienced one. This dog needed firm and consistent training from a true packleader.

ACTIVITY
As a working dog, the Rastreador Brasileiro needed lots of physical and mental stimulation to be happy and fit. A daily leashed walk along with ample playing time in large open space made this breed happy and content.
