The Russian Hound is a medium size scenthound breed that originated in Russia in 1800s. Exact origination of this breed is unknown but this same breed is the progenitor of another wonderful Russian hunting dog, the Russian Harlequin Hound. This is a medium size dog that stands between 24-27 inches and weighs about 40-70 lbs. The dog has an athletic, well balanced and strong body that is slightly longer than tall, wolf-like large head, dark eyes and small, triangular ears. The long tail is carried low. The Russian Hound has a short and dense coat that comes in yellow-red color with or without white markings. The Russian Hound has been used in hunting small and medium size game since its development. It is usually used in pair with the Barzoi dog when the Russian Hound locates and sends the game towards open field where Barzoi is ready for further chase and catch. The Russian Hound is NOT recognized by AKC.
The Russian Hound comes in yellowish-red color with or without white markings.
The coat of this dog is short and dense.
The Russian Hound is an intelligent, obedient and hard working dog that is very cheerful and affectionate. This dog loves to play with children, making a great playmate of them. Accustomed to working with other dogs, the Russian Hound gets along with them very well but its high prey drive makes it unsuitable for small, non-canine pets. This breed is very eager to please and generally easy to train with its intelligent and docile nature. The Russian Hound proves to be an excellent family companion besides being an able and established hunter.
The Russian Hound breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Training this dog is easy as it is naturally obedient and eager to please. This dog will thrive on positive training methods that accompany lots of appreciation for the dog.
The Russian Hound breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage.
