BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
Originated in northern region of Iran, the Sage Mazandarani is an ancient breed that is believed to have been in existence for over 4000 years. Believed to be the descendents of Old Hyranian Mastiffs of Persia crossed with various guard and hunting dogs, the Sage Mazandarani is used for hunting leopards, panthers and bears. There are two types of the Sage Mazandarani breed ' the mountain type and the plain type. The mountain type Sage Mazandarani is strong, well-boned type that is used for hunting bear, and the plain type Sage Mazandarani is leaner and lighter-boned type and used for hunting leopards and other cats. Both types of the Sage Mazandarani have a large, narrow head, strong muzzle, and powerful jaws. The majority of time the ears of this breed are cropped and the tail docked. The average height of the Sage Mazandarani is between 26 and 28 inches in height though they may be taller. The mountain coat type dog has heavy coat while the plain type dog has shorter coat. The most common coat color is white with dark patches. The most valued coat colors are the very rare solid black or black and tan. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club.

COLOR
White with dark patches is the most common colour pattern for this breed while dogs with solid black or black and tan colours are highly valued but they are very rare.

COAT
There are two coat type for this breed. The mountain type Sage Mazandarani has long and dense coat that protects the dog from very cold mountain weather while shorter coat of plain type Sage Mazandarani helps the dog in regulating body temperature in hot plain weather.

PERSONALITY
The Sage Mazandarani is an efficient and able hunter of medium to large game but it is also a very loving and friendly family pet as well. This dog is very calm, friendly, courageous, loyal and alert. Though relatively inactive indoors, the dog is on constant watch and will take appropriate action if it percieves any threat to its family. With its territorial nature, high protective instincts and low tolerance towards strange people and dogs, the Sage Mazandarani makes a very efficient and dependable watch and guard dog. Early socialization with other dogs and pets in the family will make this assertive dog get along well with them. The Sage Mazandarani is very gentle, loving and playful with children but its large size calls for supervision when the dog is playing with small children as it may accidentally knock them down. This breed is a wonderful addition in the family as an outstanding watch and guard dog and loving and affectionate family pet.

CARE
Both coat types; long and short, are easy to groom and low maintenance in nature. Occasional brushing of the coat will keep it free of dead hair and in top condition.

TRAINING
Training should start at an early age by an experienced, firm and consistent trainer. This dog is not for first time or week owners and needs a confident and strong owner who can dedicate time in training these dogs.

ACTIVITY
The Sage Mazandarani is a working breed with high energy levels and will require lots of space to run and play. This breed is not for apartment dwellers as these dogs love to be outdoors. Atleast a large yard or preferably rural setting is what these dogs would love most.
