The Stichelhaar is a versatile hunting dog that originated in Germany. It is the oldest German rough-haired pointing dog that was re-developed from few specimen of German Patridge dog. It is also known as Deutscher Stichelhaariger Vorstehhund, German Broken Coated Pointer and Deutsch Stichelhaar. It is a strong dog of medium to large size with stiff, hard coat and moderate beard. This even tempered dog stands between 23-27 inches. The body is almost equal in height and length. The dog has a proportionate head, slightly rounded and broad skull, and long, powerful, medium width muzzle. Nose is light to dark brown. Medium size, slightly oval eyes are brown in colour. High set, medium length ears hang closely along head. The square body has level topline, firm and straight back, well muscled loin and deep chest with well sprung ribs. The coat is stiff, harsh and bristly that comes in brown, roan brown and light brown colours with or without white or brown patches. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by FCI.
The coat can come in brown with or without white patches, brown roan with or without brown patches and light roan with or without brown patches.
The Stichelhaar has long, harsh and bristly coat and a moderate beard. The coat is 1.5 inches long. It is longer on shoulders and underside of the body and shorter on head and front of legs.
The Stichelhaars are courageous but self-controlled, balanced and calm dogs that normally are known to be one man dog. They may have very dominant and aggressive nature towards strangers but these dogs are very friendly and affectionate to people it knows. It is gentle and playful with children specially if it is raised with them from young age. The dog has a need for human companionship but needs socialization to be tolerant of other dogs and pets. This dog has high exercise needs and will need to be provided with sufficient amount of mental and physical stimulation. This is a dominante breed that needs to be socialized and trained to be moulded into an excellent family companion.
The Deutsch Stichelhaar is a very easy dog to care for. The weather resistant coat can also be considered as dirt resistant too. Dirt would fall off the coat just like water does. However, brushing the coat once or twice a week will promote its good condition. This breed loves the water. The dogs are more prone to ear infections. Therefore ears must be regularly checked and cleaned.
This dominant breed will need a dominant and assertive trainer. The training should be conducted in a positive yet firm manner.
This is a high energy dog that needs lots of physical and mental stimulation to be happy and content. This dog loves outdoors and best suited in a house with medium yard where it can play and use its pent up energy.
