The Mountain Mastiff is a cross between a purebred Mastiff and a purebred Bernese Mountain dog. They are called hybrid dogs due to their origination from two different pure breeds.
The Mountain Mastiff dogs are large in size with an average height of 28 to 38 inches and weight in the region of 150 to 200 pounds or more. They are large dogs that are primarily used as guard dogs but they have temperament and characteristics that make them very loveable family pets.
These dogs are calm, gentle, affectionate and extremely loyal to their family. They are alert and protective dogs that make excellent guard dogs.
The Mountain Mastiffs are found in different colours. Common colours for these dogs are black, black and tan, silver, white, fawn and apricot.
They can have a Mastiff coat that is short and tight or they can have a Bernese coat that is rough on outer side and dense and soft from inner side.
The Bernese type coat will need occasional brushing and grooming while the Mastiff type coat will need more regular brushing and grooming.
The Mountain Mastiffs are very large dogs with very gentle nature. They are very kind, loving, docile and tractable dogs with even temperament. These dogs are well suited for families with small children as they are specially kind and gentle to children. They get along well with other dogs and cats in the family.
These dogs are exceptionally loyal and devoted to their family. They are very protective of their people and will stand in between if they sense a threat. They are suspicious of strangers and if they sense something threatening, they will immediately take position between their owner and potential threat.
These dogs do require moderate level of exercise and will fit into an apartment or small house as long as the owner is ready to take them for regular walks and other playing activities.
They are great guard dogs as well as extremely good family pets.
These dogs may be low endurance and if they show signs of tiredness, they should not be made to work harder. Their coat requires low to moderate grooming, depending on whether they inherit the Bernese coat or a Mastiff coat respectively.
They are intelligent, eager to please and very tractable dogs and are not difficult to train. They are sensitive dogs that will need gentle and loving trainer as they will not respond to harsh training methods.
Although their size suggests otherwise, these dogs do not require any extra exercise routines than most other dogs. A daily walk or some play time should take care of their exercise needs.
