BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Pomchi breed is not a pure breed dog. They are hybrid or designer breeds. These dogs are developed from a mix of the Pomeranian breed with the Chihuahua breed. The Pomchis are also known as Chi-Pom or Chiranian. This is a new designer breed that is known to have originated in the USA. This dog has a distinct round head with a muzzle that narrows toward the nose. Their ears are moderate in size and are pointy. Their eyes are larger than average and are round in shape. These dogs can be sometimes stubborn but their good-natured self, affection and undying love for their humans will make you fall for them. They are fearless, very brave and sometimes yappy making them wonderful watchdogs despite their extremely small size.

COLOR
This dog's coat color greatly varies on the dog's parents. Colors include Medium/Light Brown, Gray, Grayish Blue, White, Cream, Black, Sable, Merle, etc. It can also come in parti color with a combination of the above colors.

COAT
Depending on which parent breed the dog inherited the most, their hair coat can be single or double coated. The length can also be short or long. However, this dog's hair coat is usually glossy, soft and smooth in texture. Brush and comb them several times in a week. Female Pomchis are known to shed more as compared to males. Especially when their hormones become unstable (when in heat or after giving birth).

PERSONALITY
The Pomchis are generally good-natured and affectionate to their humans. They love being close to their family and will protect them. They are very courageous, fearless and sometimes yappy which makes them great watchdogs. They can sometimes be a little bit stubborn but they are always eager to please their owner. They are naturally intelligent, confident, playful, loyal, outgoing, active and friendly. A human should show them proper leadership to keep them calm, content and balanced dogs.

CARE
This breed does not like the cold weather so make sure that they are warmly wrapped if you decide to take them for a walk during a cold weather. This breed is actually sensitive to extremely cold or hot temperatures. Feeding can be done once a day as for most small dogs. This dog does not do well with small children as they are very fragile. Also, avoid having them play with larger dogs. They should not be subjected to rough treatment. Bathe them only when necessary to keep the natural oils on the skin in tact. This dog is quite susceptible to dental problems. Thus, brushing their teeth should be done at least once a week. Regular cleaning of their eyes and ears should also be done. These dogs are prone to health issues like hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), patella luxation, periodontal diseases, skin problems and other related health problems. They are also likely to develop respiratory problems like a collapsed trachea.

TRAINING
This dog is an intelligent breed that can learn tricks easily. Generally well natured dogs, affectionate and eager to please their humans but can sometimes become stubborn. Housetraining can be difficult as with any small dog. They do not respond well to punishment while positive reinforcement will be your best bet to be a success in housebreaking them. Early socialization will benefit this dog and its owners. This will keep them from becoming territorial in their adult life. Do not allow this dog to develop what is known as Small Dog Syndrome where the dog thinks that they can take over leading the household. Most of the time, small dogs have obedience and socialization training overlooked. Thinking this are just small dogs and that they do not need further training. Often times this leads the dog to develop behavioral issues that usually escalates to become worst. The Pomchi puppy can be trained to walk at home, then later in the yard. They shouldn't be brought outside without completing their shots though. They do not like pressure on their necks. Thus, a body harness works best for them during training. Harness should be removed after training or walks. Training sessions should be kept short and should end in a positive note making the experience a non-stressful event.

ACTIVITY
The Pomchis are dogs who can do their own exercise as long as they have sufficient space at home. This makes them perfect for apartment or small space living. These dogs are suitable for indoor living conditions. However, as dogs, they still need to fulfill their primal instinct to walk. Thus, regular short walks would do them good as well.
