Hybrid Designer Dogs

What do you get when you crossbreed two different purebred dogs? You get a dog hybrid, the offspring parents of two diverse purebreds. Although there are some people who would prefer to have 100 % everything from their whole wheat to 100% cotton t-shirts, and puppies 100% purebred, there are definitely some advantages to having a hybrid or a more new-aged term, designer dog. Hybrids have come a long stretch from the mutts and mongrels formerly termed. The belief is that the pairing up of two different purebreds creates progeny that are shown to generally be healthier and stronger than either purebred parent; an effect called hybrid vigour. This however, is not the case when two hybrids are bred to produce a breed. Though many would beg to differ, there is nothing new about the practice of selective breeding. For years different dogs have been teamed to create an otherwise ‘perfect’ offspring exhibiting great characteristics and personality traits that would qualify them as man’s best friend.

Although every dog is as unique as its owner, perhaps the best way to find out about the hybrid’s temperament is by looking up the breeds in the cross and understand you can get any of those characteristics found in either breed. It is not uncommon to have more dominant traits from one parent than another, the same way a child will inherit more prevailing traits from their father than their mother or vice versa. While crossbreeding is rapidly increasing with various dogs, the poodle is by far the most popular choice for many reasons. First of all, you’ve probably never seen a very hairy Poodle and that’s because they don’t have much hair, which also means they don’t shed; this in turn makes them hypo-allergenic. Secondly, the Poodle is a very intelligent dog which makes it easy to train. They have an excellent health record because they are of mixed breed themselves, are fantastic with small children and won’t hate any of your family members! To many the Poodle is an ideal family pet, yet somehow ones curiosity is peaked in trying to conjure up a Poodle mix by combining its best characteristics with those of another model dog.
Because hybrids are ‘created’ from the likeness of purebreds, their names are invented as well. Take the Airedoodle for example- a mixture of Airedale Terrier and poodle; the Aussiedoodle-Australian Shepherd and Poodle, Cadoodle- collie and poodle, and the foxhoodle-fox hound and poodle. The reality is, there are oodles and oodles of mixes of poodles all in the search for the perfect dog.
