Non-Sporting Dogs

If you’re looking for a well rounded overall fantastic family dog, you’ll probably end your search at the Non Sporting Dogs category. Many of America’s most popular breeds stem from this group. Over many years, this diverse array of animals has evolved through very selective breeding processes to create the multi purpose- multi functional dog. While they are known to be hunters, herders, pullers, protectors and over all very hard workers, they also have a very loving and playful side that needs to be nurtured. The Non Sporting Dog category boasts of dogs who’s qualities and characteristics range from the perfect family pet to the ideal working animal. It seems these canines have both literally and figuratively come a long way. It is said that the Chow Chow for example, originating from China is one of the oldest breeds of dogs in existence. Its roots are believed to stem from Siberia or Mongolia. According to research, they can be traced back to at least 150 BC. These adorable puffy haired canines more closely resemble a child’s teddy bear which is perhaps what make these adorable pups easily welcomed into most families. Like most dogs, the Chow Chow is highly intelligent but very possessive and needs much experience socially with children at an early age so as to rear them into a gentler nature.

Despite its name, the American Eskimo Dog originates from Germany. Like its Non Sporting Dog counterpart the Chow Chow, it is also very intelligent and willing to please its master. These dogs make for great companions and have even proven to be very agile circus performers.
When it comes to dogs of the smaller variety, in this category befalls the Bichon Frise. These ‘curly lap dogs’ are extremely tiny but are fortunately not yappers like other small dogs in the designer dog family. Because they don’t bark as much as other smaller dogs and their size is far from intimidating, they can hardly serve as an ideal watch dog but they do however, make great family pets as they’re good with children and other pets. They’re bouncy, playful and have a lot of character but they need human companionship to be at their best. Don’t we all?

On the opposite end of the beauty scale is the ever famous bulldog. Formerly portrayed in cartoons as a nasty character the bulldog is one of the most gentle canine breeds contrary to its name ‘the bull dog’ and unfriendly outward appearance. They only thing they are guilty of is their tendency to drool, snore and pass gas. Anyone with a bulldog might also realize they are heat intolerant and for the most part, don’t enjoy water as some other dogs do. Please consider this before dropping them in the pool for an afternoon swim on a hot summer’s day.
