Terrier Dogs

For every type of person in the world there is a type of dog best suited for them. How one determines their best match is to really know and understand what sort of person they themselves are. If you live in a small cozy apartment with very limited space indoors and little greenery outdoors for an animal to frolic around, you’re probably not a fitting owner for the Terrier breed. At the end of the day with as much love as you could give them, Terriers are known for their feisty ways. They were initially bred to hunt and kill vermin above and below the ground such as rodents around barns and stables. This is not much of a surprise since the name Terrier is derived from the Latin word ‘Terra’ meaning earth.
Most Terriers are believed to originate from Great Britain and Ireland and for many years have maintained a great reputation in pest control. Fortunately as many of them are barkers by nature, it would not be unusual for them to run off a few intruders and postmen. The Terrier breed’s yapping would indicate that they have a need to burn off excess energy or they will become restless and in some cases develop destructive habits.

Cute, playful and fearless as the Terrier breed is known to be, each dog within the breed has its own unique personality and character traits. Take the Airedale Terrier for example. They have a low tolerance for various sorts of animals including other dogs. They are the largest member of their Terrier counterparts and were first used for police duty in Great Britain and Germany. They become easily bored and will often refuse to do a particular task over and over again. Perhaps they have adopted many human traits!
The Boston Terrier is a friendly but rambunctious dog and was originally bred for fighting. Over the years they have become bred more for companionship and need owners that can accept their loud, strong personality. They generally enjoy being around people, and if properly socialized will be great companions to families, children, other dogs and non-canine pets.

Consider a Terrier a small child who loves to scamper around, curiously going in and out of places they shouldn’t. Despite the small differences in personality, the Terrier breed have a similar trait in common; their bouncy expressive ways require a strong hand to discipline or they will be sure to run the household.
