Siberian Husky

The Siberian huskies were first brought into Alaska in 1909.
For centuries, they were used by the Chukchi people of the region to pull sleds and for a long time, they were also used to watch and keep reindeers together.

Siberian huskies are adapted to work in the rough conditions of Siberia; they are strong, tough, able to adapt to all conditions, and also love to work for hours.
The Siberian husky is known for its high endurance and its light-weight.

Fur traders brought them to North America for races because of their great speed.
One incident that helped popularize the breed was in 1925 when there was an epidemic of diphtheria in Nome, a city of Alaska where a lot of huskies brought medicine to the city.
They were also used in the Admiral Byrd’s Antarctic Expeditions.
The Siberian husky is now used as a companion dog but it’s not their only utility.

Male: 45-62 lbs
Female: 31-51 lbs

Color(s)

The color of a Siberian husky is determined by two colors: black and brown/copper.
All Siberian husky colors are made of these two basics tones.
They can come in black, agouti, gray, red, sable and in white or a mix of these colors.

Coat

The Siberian husky has a double coat, medium in length, which gives him a furry appearance.
It has a soft and dense undercoat and it is long enough to support the outer coat.
The outer coat’s hairs are straight and smooth.
During the shedding season, the absence of the undercoat is normal.

Life Expectancy

12 – 15 years.

Siberian Husky puppyPersonality

The Siberian husky is a friendly, calm, attentive and sociable dog.
Though, it can be very independent and hard to manage, they are extremely intelligent.
Siberian Huskies rarely bark, rather, they communicate by howling when they are happy, sad or even Siberian Huskywhen they are anxious.

Because of their friendly behavior, Siberian Huskies make poor guard dogs. They also tend to be smooth and nice with small children.
Siberian huskies can be expected to be alert, they love to please their masters and they are very adaptable.

Care

The husky is really easy to take care of.
It sheds one or two times a year. During those periods, it’s highly recommended to brush it daily.
The Siberian husky’s coat sheds dirt so it barely has an odor which makes bating unnecessary.

The coat of the Samoyed needs a lot of grooming (once a day preferably). They are heavy shedders seasonally. The coat tends to stay white without bathing.

TrainingSiberian Husky puppy

The owner of a Siberian husky must be an experienced and strict trainer.
Siberian Huskies are very intelligent and respond well to training but they can also be very stubborn, so training them can be a challenge.
Training should begin when the dog is at a young age.

The owner should try to establish rules early on to ensure that the puppy learns them.
Don’t let the dog think that the rules are flexible else he will think that it’s permissible to do it all the time. Make the training much easier establishing your self as the head master, the alpha.
The dog must never think that he is the boss.

Activity

Siberian Huskies are energetic dogs and they need a good amount of exercise (at least 30 to 60 minutes per day).
However, when the temperature is warm they should not be excessively exercised.
Huskies require a big yard with a high fence because they might want to escape and go hunting.

There should not be any problem regarding the temperature. The Siberian Husky is a well adaptable breed that can live comfortably in extreme temperature, hot or cold.

I have a Husky/Wolf mix and I have to say he is by far the best dog I have ever owned. I have had a wide range of breeds. I love my baby boy, Rex, he has a great personality and very loving. What they said about them loving small kids we blow you away when you see it first hand. My dog had never been around small kids until he was almost 4 and he fell in love with kids from then on.

hi there! i’ve never had a dog before and honestly, i’ve never really like any dogs other than the Siberian huskies. If i ever get a dog it’ll be a Siberian husky but i’m concerned with the whole space for it. I know it’s one energetic dog, i kinda live in the ghetto. Which doesn’t give me much space in the backyard. I was wondering if i ever bring him to the park every day for an hour like the description said.. Would it be okay?

Also i wanna make sure, i usually work from 2-9 ( 4 days a week) .. i have a little brother that can often be home but i’m still scared to leave it alone at home, i don’t wanna make my dog depressive T-T .. do you think it’ll be able to handle my schedule?

I agree with all the above comments, one comment to add, you as a Husky owner needs to keep them well exercised, and give them hours of attention and affection! You’ll be rewarded ten fold! But be warned if you do not put in the work and effort all hell will be let loose! All those terror stories that you hear will come true. Advice, find a sledding club, and sled it is a fantastic sport for both you and your Husky. Nothing compares to seeing a dog enjoy itself and they in return will repay you!

I live in Port Charlotte, Fla. and am thinking of getting another husky. I had one years ago and I have to admit that it was a very difficult dog to handle while trying to run a business. He kept running away and getting picked up by the puppy police. I don’t remember their eating habbits. What do tey like the most?

I have a Siberian Husky and he is adorable. His name is Tundra and he loves to play. They are very energetic. We have to walk him at least two times a day other wise he will go crazy. He will pick on our other dog and just cause trouble. He is around my baby cousin a lot and he loves her. I hate when people say that they are dangerous because they love childern they couldn’t hurt a fly! so yeah if you are energetic and can deal with the shedding a Siberian Husky might be good for you. They do need a lot opf room though they get so big! If you don’t have a lot of room then make sure to take them for walks, they will need it!

I love huskies and have owned them for 20 years. They’re lovable, adaptable and fantastic family pets. My only comment to anyone considering one is this: huskies cannot be let off a leash.

thank you for this very informative piece on the siberian huskk. we have been seeing some of these in the Philippines, and surprisingly they do quite well despite our being a tropical country.
