The Bouvier de Ardennes is a medium size dog originating in Belgium. It is a multipurpose dog that is specially used as cattle dog. It is accustomed to open spaces and to the tough work of rounding-up the cattle, driving and guarding. With decreasing number of farms and consequently cattle, the dog has reduced in population and is now considered a rare breed even in its country of origin, Belgium. It stands between 20-22 inches and weighs between 40-60 pounds.
Short, compact and well-muscled, the Bouvier de Ardennes has strong head with a broad, thick and well filled-in muzzle. Black nose is broad. The dark, medium size eyes are oval shaped and set not too apart. Ears are triangular and set high on the head. Neck is strong and well-muscled. Body is powerful but not heavy with rounded ribs. Back is well-muscled and supple. Chest is broad with well sprung ribs. The tail; if present; is short. Some dogs are born tailless. The forelegs and hind legs are powerful. The dog has a dry and coarse coat that is long and abundant except for skull. It forms a mustache and beard and comes in all colors except white.
This hardy and sturdy dog is well suited for weather extremes.
