Italian Greyhound

General

The Italian Greyhound breed is a pure ancient breed dog. They are found on ancient tombs, pets by noblemen and royalty. They are very smart and eager to please their owners which makes them highly trainable. Housebreaking can become a challenge. These dogs shed very little to no hair making them hypo-allergenic dogs.

Color

This breed can come in a variety of colors which includes cream, white, black, blue, red, fawn, gray and slate gray. These dogs can also be white with color markings or color with white marking in the chest and feet areas. They can also come in flecked version, brindle black and tan but these colors are not accepted in all countries and into some show rings.

Coat

The breed's glossy, short-haired coat makes them pretty easy to groom. Rub them with a piece of toweling or chamois to keep their coats fine, silky and gleaming. Bathe only when necessary. Immediately dry and warm the dog after the bath.

The breed sheds little to no hair making them perfect for families with allergy issues or families who doesn't want to deal with dog hair.

Personality

Italian Greyhounds are affectionate, playful, keen, kind-mannered and bright dogs. Keep them happy and balanced to avoid behavioral problems in the future. These dogs are very active, extremely fast and great climbers.

Care

The breed is sensitive to the cold weather. Keep them warm on walks during a cold weather. Keep an eye on common problems that the Italian Greyhound can accumulate.

Training

These dogs are highly trainable as they are very intelligent, submissive and eager to please dogs. However, they need an owner and trainer with a firm and consistent attitude without getting harsh. They can sometimes be difficult to housebreak. These dogs need someone to be their pack leaders or they ten to develop Small Dog Syndrome where they take over the leader of the home.

Activity

The Italian Greyhound is perfect for apartment or small space living as they can be active indoors. But they still need to satisfy their primal instinct to walk and sniff around. However, a good leader should be able to emphasize that they are only pack members or it would result to behavioral problems in the future.
