The American Indian Dog is a medium size, all round working breed. The head is in proportion to the body with a naturally looking muzzle. The ears are pricked and eyes have an intelligent look. It has medium length neck with straight back that is longer than taller. Its tail hangs low with a single curve. It has medium length glossy coat that is long and soft on outer part and short and thick plush under coat. This breed comes in different colours. This breed can have height between 18 to 20 inches and weight 35 to 60 pounds. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC. However it is recognized by APRI, DBR, DRA.
This breed is found in many different colours. Colors include black, blue, white, golden, red, gray, red & tan, tan, chocolate, cream, fawn and silver.
The double coat is glossy and comes in different colours. This breed has an inner coat that is soft, short, thick and plush while the outer coat is straight and long.
This breed is energetic and curious though mellow. This breed is working herding dog. It is a thinking breed that is non-aggressive and very loyal to its family. It is very compatible with children and generally get along well with other dogs. This dog is gentle and friendly with its family but suspicious of strangers. Its alertness makes it an excellent watch dog. This breed is very versatile and can adapt to almost all conditions. Working versatility is this dog's exceptional quality. The dog requires a firm and confident owner who can match this dog's high demand for physical activities.
The dog requires minimal grooming. The coat is hypoallergenic and will need to be brushed twice a week.
This dog needs a firm and confident trainer who can establish himself as packleader. The dog is not very difficult to train.
Being a working and herding dog, the American Indian Dog needs fair amount of physical and mental activities. It is not a dog for a lazy owner as it will need fair amount of playing time and daily walks to satisfy its energy levels.
