BREED DETAILS
GENERAL
GENERAL
The Bergamasco Sheepdog is an ancient dog breed that dates back to 2000 years. It is believed that the dog was originated in Persia, now Iran, these hardy workers helped the nomads in cattle and flock herding in the mountain regions from Persia to Europe. Certain of these nomads settled in the mountains and that is where this dog evolved its exceptional problem solving ability. With one man, a few dogs and hundreds of sheep to tend, the dog was required to work on its own and it did!. It had a unique one to one relation with human, the goal of which was to protect the flock. So while the dog took its lead from its master, the execution was left entirely on the dog and it learned to problem solve. Thus the evolution of this highly intelligent breed, the Bergamasco.
The Bergamasco is a medium size dog with height and weight between 21-25 inches and 65-85 pounds respectively. The body is well proportioned and harmonious having a rustic appearance. The dog is powerfully built with a solid, strong and compact body that gives great resistance without compromising on agility and speed of movement.
The Bergamasco sheepdog is recognized by AKC, UKC, FCI and KC.
