The Markiesje is a small dog originating in Holland. It is also known as Hollandse Tulphone and Dutch Tulip Hound. This small dog is an efficient gundog and retriever as well as being a great companion dog. This Spaniel-Poodle heritage breed has been present on the farmlands of Dutchland for hundreds of years but never considered of any use other than lap dog for woman and to keep the rodent level low in the house. It is a small, elegant and alert dog that stands up to 16 inches and weighs around 13 pounds. It comes with a long and black shiny coat with or without small white markings. Ears are folded down. The topline of the Markiesje is very straight and flows from the shoulder to its tail. With a strong and straight back that is relatively short, its hindquarters are strong and of good length and width with well-developed muscles. This breed was revived in 1999 and was recognized by Dutch club as official Dutch breed for companion dogs. The breed, though, is not recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club although efforts are underway.
The Markiesje dog comes in shiny black color with 40% or less white permitted in either blaze form or otherwise. White should not be present on cheeks, chest, stomach, paws or tip of tail.
The black coat of this dog is long and silky and comes in feathering.
The Markiesje is lively, playful and loyal to its owner. It displays a calm temperament and stable character. The dog is not shy, timid or yippy; neither it is aggressive or nervous. With its friendly nature, the dog is very gentle and kind to children and gets along well with other dogs and pets in the family. It is a brave and intelligent breed that can be trained using positive reinforcement methods. It is reserved around strangers and makes a very good watchdog. This lively dog will need space to run and play. It should be taken on daily walks.
Brushing the long coat 2-3 times a week will help it keep clean and tangle free. As with all dogs, teeth, nails, ears, attended to and check for growths or dental problems. This breed sheds little hair. The hair is thin and easy to clean when bathing the dog. Markiesjes can develop dandruff. A quick bath with moisturizing shampoo using natural ingredients should clear that up quickly.
This dog will need consistent training and early age socialization. The trainer should be firm yet gentle and use positive methods to train this dog.
The Markiesje is a lively and energetic breed that needs lots of space to run, roam and play. Though it can adjust in an apartment, the dog is best suited to a large yard.
