The Old-Time Farm Shepherd (also referred to as OTFS or Farm Shepherd) is an old and rather rare breed of working dog that originated in United States of American. This collie type breed is an exceptionally intelligent and versatile dog that has been used as general farm dog, guardian of flock and homes and hunting dog. This very human oriented breed descended from Scotch Collies. Once very popular among shepherds and farm owners due to its multi-talented personality, the breed suffered a declining interest as people began to shift attention to more fancied registered dogs. By 1980s, this breed became almost extinct when J. Richard McDuffie took it upon himself to start a nationwide search for this dog and he eventually succeeded in locating a family who had kept a line of this breed pure for generations. He acquired four puppies from this family and two female puppies from another family and founded the Old-Time Farm Shepherd breed.
This is a medium size breed with large expressive eyes. The dogs stand between 20-24 inches and weigh around 40-60 lbs. This breed has moderate length coats and mostly seen in sable and white colouring though tri-color, merle and black and tan are also seen.
This dog is NOT recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club.
