The Olde English Bulldogge (OEB) is a relatively new dog breed that was developed as a re-creation of old bull-baiting dogs with less aggressive nature. This breed was developed by David Leavitt in 1971 by crossing English Bulldog, American Bulldog, American Pitbull Terrier and Bullmastiff breeds. This resulted in the emergence of a more agile and healthier Olde English Bulldogge. The OEB is a strong and muscular medium size dog with height between 17-23 inches and weight about 50-90 lbs. It is a strong, powerful and athletic dog with a well proportioned and balanced body. The dog has a large and prominent head with slightly wrinkled forehead. The square, wide and deep muzzle leads to large black nose. Set wide apart, round or almond shaped medium size eyes are brown in colour. Rose shaped small or medium size ears are set high and back on the skull. Neck is medium size, strong and slightly arched. The compact body of this dog has wide and muscular back, medium length, strong and slightly arched loin and deep, wide chest with well sprung ribs. Tail is set low and tapering from base to end. It can be pump handle or straight with pump handle being preferred. Tail should reach the hocks or be slightly shorter. Tail is carried down, horizontal or high. Coat is short, close and of medium density. It should be shiny, showing good health. Color can be brindle of red, gray, fawn or black; either solid or pied (with white). Solid white, fawn, red or black; solid color or pied. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by CKC, NKC,DRA, BBC,OEBA among others.
This breed comes in different colors that include Gray, black, brindle of red, brindle spots on white, fawn, red or black solid or with white.
The OEB has a short to medium length smooth and tight coat.
The Olde English Bulldogge is an alert, courageous and confident dog. It is bold, friendly and very loving around its family. With its docile and eager to please nature, the dog is very willing to do whatever is asked of it and even overexert itself. With a fierce appearance, the dog is protective of its family and will fearlessly counter any threat to its family and property. It is an extremely strong dog with lots of energy. This dog generally gets along well with other dogs in the family but may occasionally show same sex aggression. Early socialization and training is important. The OEB is gentle and playful with children and makes a trustworthy companion of children. It is a healthy breed with none of the problems that other bulldog breeds suffer from. The OEB is a valuable addition for all the family.
The OEB is a short coated breed that does not require much in grooming.
This docile and eager to please dog is very trainable with a trainer who displays authority and natural leadership. Positive training methods will yield most out of this dog when it comes to training.
The OEB is an energetic dog that will need fair amount of physical and mental activities. The dog should be taken on daily walks and provided with fair amount of playing time in open areas. This adaptable breed will suit all sorts of lifestyles including apartment living.
