The Perdiguero Navarro is also known as Old Spanish Pointer, Navarro Pointer, Pachon Navarro and, Pachon De Victoria. It is also referred to as 'double nosed dog' for its unusually 'split or double' nose. It appears to be a normal dog's nose, but with the nostrils separated by a band of skin and fur dividing the nose all the way to the dog's upper lip. The Perdiguero Navarro is a hunting dog that originated in Spain. The perdiguero Navarro is believed to have been developed as early as the twelfth century from Talbot Hound and other hound breeds. It may be the ancestor of the other pointers including the double-nosed Andean tiger hound found in South America. Although the breed has come close to extinction several times over the centuries, it was kept alive in rural Spain. Originally used to hunt elk, it is now used as a partridge dog, capable of hunting, pointing, and retrieving birds. This medium size dog stands between 20-24 inches and weighs between 55-66 lbs. It has a large but not too heavy head and a medium size muzzle. Large eyes are chestnut brown in colour. Long ears with rounded tips are set low. Nose colour can be black or self-coloured according to coat. Muscular neck is slightly arched. Medium size strong body of this dog comes with a level topline and wide, deep chest. This breed has rather short but good boned legs with short and round feet. Tail is long and curved. The short coat comes in liver/white or orange/white colouring. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club except for CKC.
The Perdiguero Navarro aka Old Spanish Pointer comes in either orange/white combination or liver/white combination, commonly ticked. The head and large patches on the coat are generally solid-colored.
This breed has a short coat though some dogs do have long coats.
The Perdiguero Navarro is described in its standard as energetic, eager and determined dog. The perdiguero Navarro is an active and enthusiastic dog that loves to work and has great endurance. This dog has been used by hunters for centuries because of its energy, willingness to please, and excellent scenting ability.
The short coat should be easy to maintain with occasional brushing and bathing when needed.
With an eager to please attitude, the dog should respond well to positive training sessions. As with all the dogs, the trainer needs to display proper packleader qualities.
Being a hunting dog, the Perdiguero Navarro has a very active lifestyle and the dog would really appreciate playing sessions and activities that involve both physical and mental stimulation.
