The Pyrenean Mastiff is a large breed of dog that originated in Spain as livestock guardian dog. It is a very large dog with harmonious build. This dog is strong, muscular with a firm bone structure. This breed is believed to have descended from the dogs brought by the Phoenicians 3000 years ago when they traveled from Assyria and Sumeria to the place which is now Spain. A large molossor type dog, the Pyrenean Mastiff has been used as a flock guardian for centuries. It was developed to protect the flock from wolves and bears. In modern days, this dog is more of a home guardian and family companion. This dog stands atleast 30 inches with no upper limit and weighs about 150-180 lbs though some can grow as heavy as 220 lbs or more. It comes with large, strong and long head, slightly convex skull and slightly tapered muzzle. Black nose is large and broad. Hazel coloured small, almond shaped eyes hold alert and noble expression which can quickly turn into a stern expression when directed at an opponent. Medium size triangular ears hang down the cheeks in repose and stand away from cheek when the dog is alert and attentive. It's powerful, strong and robust, slightly longer than tall body comes with deep and broad chest with well sprung ribs, straight and level back, long and narrow loin and slightly tucked up belly. This dog has a medium length, rather coarse hair. White is the predominant coat color. The coat can have golden, black, or shades of grey markings. Skins under these markings have dark pigmentation. This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by FCI.
The Pyrenean Mastiff is most commonly found in white color that can have patches of golden, grey, yellow, brown, black, grey-silver, light beige and marbled. Ears are always spotted while tip of the tail and lower part of legs are always white.
The medium length, dense and thick coat is stiff and bristly in nature. It is longer on shoulders, neck, belly, backs of legs and tail.
The Pyrenean Mastiff is a calm, noble, affectionate and friendly dog with its family and owner. This docile and obedient breed is loving and protective with children as well as very tolerant of other dogs and pets in the family. Its love for children makes it very playful and loving playmate of them. The dog loves to be part of the family and craves human attention. It is wary of strangers, and with naturally high protective instincts, this dog makes a great watch and guard dog, a natural deterrent to invaders due to its huge size and appearance. This dog needs early age socialization and training to be a well rounded dog. With its huge size, an socialized and untrained dog will be quite a handful to control. Also, this breed will require a strong and experienced owner who can establish himself as this dog's packleader. The Pyrenean Mastiff makes an excellent family pet and protection dog that is best suited to families with atleast a yard or preferably large open space in a rural area where it can consume its high energy levels through play and roaming.
At least two times a week brushing of the coat is needed to keep it in top condition. This breed sheds heavily twice a year and will need additional grooming and brushing in those days.
An experienced owner is needed to train this dog. Although docile and obedient, this is an independent breed with a mind of its own. Without an assertive owner, the dog may not respond well to training. Positive reinforcements such as rewards and appreciation will yield best out of this dog.
As a working breed, the Pyrenean Mastiff has high exercise demands and it is best suited for families with a large yard or preferably a rural setting.
