Sage Mazandarani

Originated in northern region of Iran, the Sage Mazandarani is an ancient breed that is believed to have been in existence for over 4000 years. Believed to be the descendents of Old Hyranian Mastiffs of Persia crossed with various guard and hunting dogs, the Sage Mazandarani is used for hunting leopards, panthers and bears.

There are two types of the Sage Mazandarani breed ' the mountain type and the plain type. The mountain type Sage Mazandarani is strong, well-boned type that is used for hunting bear, and the plain type Sage Mazandarani is leaner and lighter-boned type and used for hunting leopards and other cats.

Both types of the Sage Mazandarani have a large, narrow head, strong muzzle, and powerful jaws. The majority of time the ears of this breed are cropped and the tail docked.

The average height of the Sage Mazandarani is between 26 and 28 inches in height though they may be taller. The mountain coat type dog has heavy coat while the plain type dog has shorter coat. The most common coat color is white with dark patches. The most valued coat colors are the very rare solid black or black and tan.

This breed is NOT recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club.
