BREED DETAILS
GENERAL
GENERAL
The Sarplaninac is an uncommon dog breed named after the Shar Plania Mountain range where they are usually found. However, the dog can also be found in other mountain areas such as Korab, Bistra, Mavrova and Pelister. As not many people have experience with the breed, there are many traits of this dog that are unknown. The Sarplaninac is also known to be called as Sar Planina, Illyrian Sheepdog, Macedonian-Yugoslav Shepherd Dog ' Sharplaninec, Charplaninatz, Yugoslav Shepherd Dog, Illyrian Dog, Yugoslav Mountain Dog, Ovcarski Pas Srbije I Crne Gore and Sarpie.
The Sarpies are generally used as a livestock guardian dog. As they are more protective of animals in their territory, the dog is made to protect large flocks from bear, wolf, fox, lynx and even humans. These dogs are extremely protective of their land, flock and their families. The dog is very reserved with those that they do not know. They are unfriendly dogs. Many times the dog tends to be aggressive.

ACTIVITY
The dog's coat color usually comes in solid color. The shade can be anything ranging from White to Dark Brown. Although Greenish Gray (Iron Gray) and Dark Gray are preferred, Pied or White markings are not permissible on shows.
COAT
The dog's coat is usually long, thick, fairly coarse on the neck, body, back of legs and some feather in the tail. The head and the front of the legs have short coating while their undercoat is short, fine and very thick.
PERSONALITY
The Sarplaninac dog is a very independent, strong-willed dog. The dog is more interested in their flock and their family is not exactly their main focus. Although they do not trust anyone, whether it be friend or stranger, and are overly protective of animals on their property, they can get along well with children in their family.
The dog may be naturally intelligent but training the dog could be difficult as they are often defiant. They are excellent herders as any animal living on their property will surely be under their protections; however, these dogs are not exactly the ideal companion animals. Indoors, the dog is usually calm and quiet but they are highly energetic once they step outside.
CARE
The dog will need very simple grooming and maintenance. Brushing regularly for about once a week is all that they need to keep them looking at their best. The dog can take care of their exercise needs on their own as long as they provided a large area where they can run and play in.
The breed is known to be generally healthy and free from any genetic diseases as the breed is not common and any serious health problems common for these dogs may not yet be known. Given proper nutrition and care, sufficient exercise and regular visits to the vet, these dogs can live up to 11-13 years on the average.
TRAINING
This dog is highly intelligent and can sometimes be a bit rebellious. The dogs are not meant to be socialized. The dogs will need owners with very strong leadership skills that will be able to make them see that humans are higher in pack rank than animals. If proper training is provided, these dogs can be very obedient. Early socialization and proper training for this dog can make them grow-up to be well-mannered pets.
ACTIVITY
These dogs require plenty of physical exercise to drain their excess energy. Play or running free on a farm will take care of their exercise needs on its own; however, they will still need to satisfy their primal instinct to walk. A more extensive walk or jog is needed if play is nonexistent.
This dog is not recommended for apartment or small space living. The dog's weather-proof coat allows the dog to be content to live and sleep outdoors. The dog's character requires a zesty, outdoor life and will do best in a farm with a flock to protect.
