The Canarian Warren Hound is also known by other names as Canary Islands Hound, Podenco Canario or Canarian Pharaoh Hound. It is an ancient dog breed that has its roots in the ancient Egyptian times. Though the dog is originally from the Canary Island in Spain, its ancestral roots goes back to Egyptian boundaries. Its ancestors were probably brought to the Canary Islands by the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Carthaginians and the Egyptians themselves. The dog is primarily used for hunting small game and specially rabbits. The dog is medium sized, slender, light breed without excessive fat. The dog stands from 21.5 to 25 inches and can weigh up to 55 lbs.
The head is elongated, truncated cone shape with skull being flat and longer than wide. Large nose is flesh colored. Muzzle is large and prominent. Eyes are oblique, small and almond shaped with large and pricked ears that are wide at base and tapering to a point. Neck is strong with tight skin and without dewlap. Body is slightly longer than tall with a strong, muscular and well developed back, fit for racing and hunting. The chest is well developed. Strong loin is slightly elongated. Forelegs are perfectly straight, vertical and parallel with fine but solid bone. Hindlegs are vertical and straight. Tail is set rather low.
This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by FCI and UKC.
